Dear CES,

Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope that everyone had a relaxing holiday break filled with fun and happiness.

Your students are doing a wonderful job of smoothly  transitioning back into the rhythm of school.

We have many exciting events scheduled for 2019 and hope that you and your family take time to participate. On Monday evening our visitors from Costa Rica will be arriving and will stay with us until Thursday, January 24. Five teachers and twelve students will be visiting with us. The teachers and students will be primarily working with Mrs. Sobol's 6th grade class. The community will have a chance to the meet our guests on Tuesday at our Family STEAM Night and Dinner (please see flyer below). The visit is part of the CES Global Classroom initiative and is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the education and cultural systems of other countries. This experience also supports the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate attribute of being a Global and Ethical Citizen. Please contact me at jtdouds@fcps.edu if you have any questions and would like further information about this event.

Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand Presents FCPS Budget for Fiscal Year 2020

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand presented a $3.0 billion Proposed Budget for the 2019-20 school year (Fiscal Year 2020) to the Fairfax County School Board at its business meeting on January 10. The FY 2020 Proposed Budget, with a focus on employee compensation, represents an increase of $117.4 million, or 4.1 percent, over the FY 2019 Approved Budget.

“Student success begins and ends with a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, which is why the FY 2020 Proposed Budget continues to focus on our strategic priority of recruiting and retaining great teachers through market competitive compensation,” said Brabrand. “The proposed budget includes a $55.2 million investment in the teacher salary scales which is the final phase of a multi-year plan to bring teacher salaries to the market average and includes a 1.0 percent market scale adjustment. Our goal is to ensure that every student–by name and by need–receives an excellent and equitable education in a 21st-century learning environment with the very best teachers.”

VDOE Student School Climate Survey Cancellation

Before the winter break, I notified you that your child would be taking a statewide Student School Climate Survey mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. This survey was scheduled to be conducted from Monday, January 14, 2019 to Friday, February 8, 2019. Based on feedback from principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, has granted an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey for this year. Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered.

If you have any questions, please contact Josh Douds at 703-502-3500.

This past week our students focused on PERSEVERANCE.

WHAT DOES PERSEVERANCE MEAN?

You complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up. The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles. Perseverance is a uniquely human characteristic that identifies an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere can set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance can handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.
