 We LOVE Seeing Your Children
With the new year, we want to take a moment to remind parents of the importance of regular attendance for our students. Missing just 10% of school can impact academic and social success – absences and tardies can add up quickly. Students who attend school daily are more likely to be successful in the classroom and to eventually graduate on time. Fairfax County Public Schools and Canterbury Woods Elementary School are committed to working with parents and students to address and encourage strong attendance. Please check out Dr. Brabrand’s recent message on the importance of regular attendance in FCPS (https://www.fcps.edu/attendance).
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that all children between the ages of 5 and 18 attend school on a regular basis. In order to work together, you can expect a call from the school if your child has missed an accumulated 10% of school hours due to absences, tardies and/or early dismissals. We are happy to partner with you and work together to ensure your child is attending school on a regular basis. Feel free to contact your child’s counselor or the school social workers with any concerns, questions, or help with your child’s attendance.
We do understand that some absences are unavoidable and that children do become sick and need to stay home occasionally, but it is important that they are in school as often as possible. Please be sure to call the to report any absences or late arrivals to the Canterbury Woods attendance line at 703-764-5656 or email CanterburyWoodsESAttendance@fcps.edu

AAP Referral Reminder
All AAP level IV referral files (including work samples) are due to Canterbury Woods on Thursday, January 10th by the end of business. Please drop your
packet off with an office staff member and pick up a letter of receipt.
Allergy Reminders
As we begin the new year, here are a few reminders in relation to student food safety for our students with life-threatening allergies. In order to limit exposure to allergens, our policy is that each class may host only two events that include food each year. In addition, there is a peanut-free table in the cafeteria and custom salads available to students with egg allergies who should refrain from using the salad bar. With regard to birthday treats, sometimes well-intentioned parents, in an effort to be inclusive, will prepare homemade birthday treats that they believe to be “allergen-free.” These situations can unfortunately lead to ingestion of an allergen. Parents of students with allergies are asked to provide a safe treat alternative and to remind students that they should not be eating homemade treats at any time. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe!
VDOE Student School Climate Survey: Update
This year, FCPS was asked by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), to administer the Student School Climate Survey beginning Monday, January 14, 2019 and ending Friday, February 8, 2019
Based on constructive feedback from our principals and school administrators, Dr. Brabrand, in collaboration and consultation with State Superintendent, Dr. Lane, is granting an exemption of the VDOE Student School Climate Survey.
Therefore, the VDOE Student School Climate survey will not be administered in FCPS to students in grades four, five and six.
