8th Grade Civics Students:

Services Hours are Due this Friday, January 11!

FCPS requires 8th grade students to complete 15 hours of community service: 7 hours during first semester (by January 11, 2019) and 8 hours during second semester (by May 31, 2019). All 15 hours of service learning must take place outside of instructional hours such as: during Panther Time, after school, and/or outside of school. In order to enter in service hours a student must obtain the email address of the adult for whom they are performing service.

To receive credit, all service must involve work by the student and provide a benefit to the community. Credit will not be given for mere attendance at an event, or for a project or activity that benefits only the student, his or her relatives, friends, or neighbor. Additionally, you cannot benefit from the service in any way financially or academically.

FCPS allows students to begin accruing these service hours in 7th grade, and the Social Studies department is highly encouraging our students to do so.  Service learning is an effective way for youth to develop the drive and desire to become lifelong volunteers and engaged citizens. Students can participate in activities through outside organizations like Volunteer Fairfax as well as at Rachel Carson Middle School. Service learning at Rachel Carson aligns with the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate that supports the development of responsibility to the local and global community.

USTA:

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) proudly presents TGA (Teach, Grow, Achieve) Premier Youth Tennis, the first and only national tennis enrichment program in the country. Students will develop tennis skills utilizing youth-friendly equipment in a play-to-learn style that gets them rallying and having fun right away. In addition, students will learn relevant life skills and STEAM skills in the context of tennis such as sportsmanship, respect, math, science, technology, and more. Our Middle School Tennis Club includes a focus on match play, teamwork, and strategies to prep students for their future high school tennis team. This program is ideal for students who are new to the sport or those with beginner level skills. All students will receive awards at the end of each session. The club is taught by USTA-trained and background-screened coaches utilizing the most current teaching methodology. Lastly, all tennis equipment is provided during the program (e.g. racquets, balls, portable nets).

This is an 8-week program, 1 hour a week, with a fee of $144.00 which can be paid on MySchoolBucks.  Registration fees are non-refundable.  There will be 14 student openings for this program. This program will run from January 24-March 14 on Thursdays from 2:45-3:45PM.

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Program of Studies (POS).  A video showing advanced academics in action, as well as information about middle schools services link

  • Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV): Carson Middle School is a designated Level IV center school.  Level IV services are available for students found eligible through a central selection process.  The program is available in Grades 3-8.  Eligible students use curriculum from the AAP Curriculum Framework in the four academic subject areas on a full-time basis.  Screening for Level IV services occurs during specific screening cycles:
  • Fall screening is only held for students who are new to FCPS and have been referred.
  • Spring screening is held for any FCPS-enrolled student who has been referred.

Due to the volume of files screened centrally for Level IV services, deadlines are strictly held, and referrals will not be accepted past the published deadline.

  • The referral form is available on the FCPS website.
  • A referral form may be turned in from the first day of school until the published deadline.
  • The referral deadline is January 10, 2019 for students who are not new to FCPS this school year but wish to apply for the 2019-2020 school year.
  • Referral forms should be submitted to your child’s counselor by the posted deadline.
