FROST NEWS & NOTES

Next Frost PTA Meeting: The next PTA meeting is 9 January 2019 at 9am in the Frost library.

Frost Bathroom Beautification Rescheduled!! Please join us in enhancing the Frost bathrooms with painting colorful messages of positivity and engaging images! We need artists and anyone able to help with a paintbrush on January 10th and 11th after school/evening.  Sign-up to volunteer at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0549acae2da02-frost   If you have a great design idea to share for the project please send it to: gillian.kimura@gmail.com or give it to Mr. Lyons or Ms. Morgan.

Thanking Outstanding Volunteers. The Frost community would like to recognize two amazing volunteers this month.   Rebecca Hanson has organized and conducted three family dinner nights for the PTA.  These events not only provide a convenient way to enjoy a dinner with your kids and some friends, they also have raised over $800 for the our school.  Leslie McKnight has been organizing and chaperoning Skate night for the past few years.   At the latest Skate Night on December 7th, Leslie brought sweet treats, snacks, and hot chocolate for our teen skaters.    The next Skate Night is 8 Feb 2019.

Frost Family Festival Volunteers NEEDED! This event is held on the evening of February 22, 2019 and welcomes students and families from all Frost feeder schools.  You probably remember attending this event when your child was in 6th grade, and previewed courses, electives, and perhaps purchased some Frost spirit wear apparel.   The committee lead for this event organizes a Sign-up Genius for 7th and 8th grade parents to make baked goods for sale, and finds a vendor to sell entrée dining items such as Chick-fil-A or Flippin’ Pizza.  It’s a very easy job and a great way to give back to Frost! Contact Miklos Kiss at miklos.kiss@cox.net for more information!

7th Grade Parent Volunteer for Sprit Wear Needed! Frost PTA is also in need of someone to manage spirit wear for the 2019-20 school year. Contact Miklos Kiss at miklos.kiss@cox.net for more information!

Frost PTA Grants!  Your Frost PTA is excited to announce the recipients of its Fall 2018 Grants! The grants, which are funded by your PTA Membership Dues and generous donations, allow Frost Middle School Teachers and Staff to supplement the curriculum with activities and materials not fully funded by the existing school budget. The Fall Grants, which totaled $7,664.07, will fund the following:

  1. The World Languages Department will order a class set of Spanish story books to increase linguistic acquisition and literary skills.
  2. The 7th Grade Life Science Classes will once again be able to participate in the Under the Sea – Chesapeake Critters in-school field trip. The presentation will include live organisms indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay. The presentation covers many of the Life Science Standards and is always a huge hit.
  3. With their funds, the 8th Grade Engineering Team will build sustainable raised bed gardens to support both the science and engineering classrooms. This team will also grow crops for the Frost Weekend Backpack food program.
  4. For our teachers, the PTA is pleased to provide funding for the Superstar of the Month Program. This program recognizes the great work done by Frost Teachers and gives them a gift card to a local restaurant or business.
  5. The school’s Mentor Program will receive funding for their monthly after school activities.
  6. Frost’s Odyssey of the Mind Teams will receive funds to help cover parts of their competition registration fees.
  7. For the French Language Department, funding will be provided for hands-on activities that encourage exploration and celebration of the French language and culture.
  8. Frost’s Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) will receive funding to cover the costs of incentives for the Frost Zone Store, zone cards to reinforce positive behavior, all materials required for monthly lessons and events, and for Positivity Project branding materials to help build excitement around this new initiative.

Thank you, everyone, for your continued support of the PTA. It is because of your support that the PTA can help the teachers and Staff meet the needs of your students in creative and memorable ways.

Coming Soon! Frost Spelling Bee! Can your child spell the words “see,” “spot,” or “run”?  Can they spell “ESPN”?  If they can spell those words and other, more challenging ones, they are eligible for the Frost Spelling Bee! ;)  The winner of the bee will win a trophy, a subscription to Kids Britannica, and a chance to possibly compete on ESPN in the National Spelling Bee in May!  The Frost Spelling Bee will be held on Monday, January 28th  from 2:30-4:30 in the lecture hall.  If your child is interested in competing, you can send an email to Colin Verbicar at mcverbicar@fcps.edu, or turn this form into their English teacher if they received one in English. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m2s14-DaNXQ16QKecnDwWJlsiBqjdWes/view?usp=sharing
