Course Fair- New Format

Tomorrow (Thursday, 12/19) during Seahawk Seminar we will be holding our first redesigned Course Fair. This event will help kick-off the start of the Academic Advising season for the 2019-2020 school year!

Our hope is that this new format (used to be tables set up a lunch) will help students make more informed decisions regarding course selections. Students will be provided a “Curriculum Fair Form” during their 1st period SS where they can select sessions to attend. Students will be able to attend three sessions to get information about different courses to see if they’re interested in choosing that for next year. This is not only for electives, but also core classes. Students can see if the honors or IB sections of core classes may be appropriate for them.

The redesign of the Elective/Curriculum Fair will:

  • Help students make informed choices
  • Help teachers of electives to better reach students who are interested in their course
  • Help teachers highlight the content of their course
  • Help eliminate schedule change requests at the beginning of the year

Parents and guardians can check out the online course catalog found on the SLHS website, under the Academics tab, to help your student choose sessions to attend.  We will also be having our Curriculum Night on January 9th at 6:30pm when we invite families to come and explore courses as well has have the option to attend a number of brief presentations. Please mark your calendars now. Curriculum Night is for rising 9th through rising 12th graders. More information about the presentations on Curriculum Night is coming.

As you may have heard, the Fairfax County School Board has directed Superintendent Brabrand to incorporate necessary funding in his FY 2020 Proposed Budget for FCPSOn’s expansion to all high schools. FCPSOn is a digital transformation initiative that provides students with access to one device to use for learning. Students will have access to a device at school and will also be able to take their device home. This is exciting news!  It will help ensure they have equitable access to technology and to instructional practices that support their development of Portrait of a Graduate attributes including communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Employers will expect these skills, along with tech fluency and innovation, from tomorrow's workforce. FCPSOn helps prepare students to meet those demands. If you want to learn more, visit the FCPSOn public webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/fcpson
