Meme Day

Students show their spirit during Meme Day on Thursday.

Dear Woodson Families,

Winter break has arrived.  Just as a reminder, students will be out of school from December 24, 2018 through January 4, 2019. Students return on Monday, January 7, 2019.

During the break, our main office will be closed while our staff enjoys time off with family.

Students are encouraged to relax and enjoy the winter break, perhaps even read a book, as they will not be assigned any major school work during this time. I hope this time away from school is an opportunity for your family to reconnect and spend quality time together. Faculty and staff will also be on winter break and have been encouraged to enjoy this time with their families.

As such, faculty are not expected/required to check email or respond to communication during this time.  If there is an emergency, please email your student’s administrator as they will be checking email at times over break.

2018 has been a great year to be a Cavalier.  Have a wonderful, joyful, and relaxing break.  See you in 2019!

Warmly,

Dr. Floyd
Principal

Student Services News

Starting on Thursday, January 10th, Woodson HS staff will begin working with students on the course selection process for the 2019-2020 school year.

Each teacher will meet with students individually across January 10th (odd day) and January 11th (even day) during their normal scheduled class time to provide students with guidance on course options available next year and to provide students with their feedback of the course(s) that would be the best fit. Teacher feedback for students will be based on demonstrated work ethic in the class, assessment grades, and applicable standardized testing. This is an important step as we strive to help students and parents navigate the course selection process.

After these advising sessions, students will meet individually with school counselors, according to the timeline below, to select their courses for the coming year. It is very important for students to choose courses carefully for changes after the new school year begins may not be possible because of class size.

Following the individual counselor and student advising meetings, counselors will print a copy of the students’ selected courses for them to take home.  Students’ course selections are also viewable in SIS.  We strongly recommend students to consider the teachers’ recommendations when selecting courses for the upcoming school year. If your student selects a class that was not recommended by the teacher, you will be notified and are encouraged to discuss your student’s selection with him/her.

ANGST: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety

On Thursday, January 24th at 7:00 p.m. (snow date: Tuesday, January 29th) in the Woodson Auditorium, join us for a free screening of ANGST, a film about anxiety, truth & hope. https://angstmovie.com/

This documentary, produced by IndieFlix, is for all parents and guardians of students in grades K-12 and students over the age of 13.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., impacting 54 percent of females and 46 percent of males, with age seven being the median age of onset, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety – from the producers to the interviewees.

Representatives will be available after the screening to provide resources to support families.

For more information about this event, please contact Woodson Director of Student Services, Beth Lash at bllash@fcps.edu.

Student School Climate Survey

This winter our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education and the University of Virginia, is participating in a statewide student school climate survey. The purpose of this survey is to help schools assess their progress in establishing a positive school climate that promotes student learning.

The survey will be completed online using computers at school. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents will not have access to their child’s survey answers. There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review and is available online at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/school-climate/index.shtml.

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them, and how they feel about attending school. They will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed at school and whether they have been bullied themselves.

The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact Ellen Hagan-Bowerman at emhaganbower@fcps.edu or 703-503-4686 by Wednesday, January 9th.

Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.

If you have questions regarding this survey, please contact Ellen Hagan-Bowerman at emhaganbower@fcps.edu.  Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of school climate.
