Cooper Science Olympiad Wins Second Place
Both our Science Olympiad teams competed in the Linear Invitational Tournament. We received over three dozen individual medals and Cooper placed second in our region!
The competition was tough and rigorous, so we congratulate all our hard working students. The competition was a great team building event with many individual medalists from Cooper being recognized.
Cooper Academic Support Center
Starting in January, Cooper will be reintroducing the Academic Support Center (ASC). The mission of ASC is to provide a quiet and secure work setting where all learners are encouraged to be self-directed, independent, and responsible. Our goal is to assist students in fulfilling educational objectives by providing a variety of learning opportunities in a pleasant, technologically advanced environment. The ASC will be available to students each day during lunch as well as Wednesdays after school during A session (2:30 - 3:30 PM).

Rise Against Hunger Event-February 9, 2019
Collection boxes will be sent home with students
on Monday, January 7
Last year’s Rise Against Hunger event was a huge success and provided a wonderful service learning opportunity for children and adults of all ages. In partnership with Rise Against Hunger, the Langley pyramid elementary, middle and high schools are again coming together on Saturday, February 9th at Colvin Run Elementary with a goal to prepare 100,000 meal packages for schools and orphanages around the world. Click here to learn more about Rise Against Hunger. Last year, the Langley pyramid raised enough funding to provide 100,008 meals for families in developing countries around the world, and additional funding to support disaster relief in the United States. Last year’s meals went to families in Mozambique.
We package meals based on the amount of money raised and our Langley pyramid goal is $29,000 which provides 100,000 meals. With each meal feeding 5-6 people, this is a wonderful event that impacts 500,000 individuals around the world and broadens the perspective of our students and families. This is a wonderful way for our students to better understand how their role in a school community impacts their global community.
Until January 25th, parents may continue donating online here to help our fundraising efforts. Please share this link http://events.stophungernow.org/LangleyPyramid2019 with family and friends who may be interested in supporting our cause.
Students will receive collection boxes on January 7.

Energy Zone Newsletter
Winter 2018
Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) has developed quarterly Energy Zone articles for schools to use in their monthly parent newsletters; below is the Winter 2018 newsletter.
The winter season always provides a time for contemplation on the events of the calendar year and make goals for the new year. As a department, we have undergone numerous changes and continue to provide a distinguished food service program that complements the education students receive in the classroom. FNS continually asks the question, “how do we get better?” and this question can be applied to numerous aspects of our lives.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide tips that can challenge you to “be better” in 2019: 1. Make healthy food choices As we tell our students during their student salad bar lessons, you have the “choice” to decide several times each day what you will eat. A healthy plate is defined by a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and fat-free or low- fat dairy foods. 2. Wash your hands Hands should be washed often to prevent the spread of illness and infection. The five simple steps are wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry. 3. Get active! Whether it is a family walk after a holiday meal or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, there are several ways to stay active during the holiday season. 4. Get enough sleep The National Sleep Foundation recommends 9-11 hours each night for school-aged children and 7-9 hours for adults. 5. Try something new This is another tip we give students during their salad bar lesson. Whether it is a new hobby, food or exercise; healthy role modeling can encourage children to try new healthy behaviors.
As you are considering family goals for 2019, the school food and nutrition program is a great choice to consider. Aside from all school meals including the five food groups as outlined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, salad bars are offered in over 60 elementary schools. The salad bar provides students with a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable offerings (see right) with one being added each week. If you have a student in high school, we offer daily concept lines that give students to have over 20 meal options each day.
Food and Nutrition Services wishes you and yours a happy and festive holiday season and joyous New Year!
We hope you had a wonderful, relaxing Winter Break!
Students return to school on January 7.
