 Dear Lake Braddock Community,
Knowing that Thursday and Friday will be fun-filled and busy days, I'm sending the weekly correspondence a few days early. This week, I spent time in art classrooms which was definitely a highlight for me. Lake Braddock offers such a wide range of classes that allow students to express creativity in so many ways. It was a pleasure to be in those instructional spaces and see what students were creating. I also got the opportunity to stop by the 2nd ever Computer Science Honor Society inductions. This is a growing program at LBSS sponsored by Ms. Eva Anderson with a group of dedicated and passionate students, many of whom plan to study computer science after graduation (pictured on the left). We held a successful electives fair this week, offering students the opportunity to check out three different options for next year. Last night I had the opportunity to attend the Masterworks concert (pictured below) which included our choral students accompanied by the symphony orchestra, along with some middle and elementary choral students. The concert was directed by Andrea Harmon and Austin Isaac. It was just magical. Today we will have a holiday celebration to thank our staff, with treats prepared by students in gourmet classes. On Friday, we will thank our custodial and cafeteria staffs, without whom we could not run this building. It is truly a team effort at LBSS and we are grateful for your support.
Enjoy a wonderful two weeks and we will see you in 2019!

LBSS Offices
Lake Braddock offices will close at 3:30pm on December 21st and will reopen on Monday, January 7th on our normal schedule. (Sorry about the error in the last edition of this newsletter. I guess you could say I'm a bit excited about winter break and got my dates mixed up!)
Winter Break Assignments
We have asked our teachers to follow these guidelines regarding winter break assignments in the sprit of honoring family and family traditions as we simultaneously address issues of student stress.
- Be mindful of the amounts of homework assigned to students over the holiday break.
- Schedule no major assessments immediately upon return from break.
- For classes having long term assignments, refrain from scheduling due dates immediately after the holiday.
VDOE Student School Climate Survey, (grades 9-12)
This winter our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education and the University of Virginia, is participating in a statewide student school climate survey. The purpose of this survey is to help schools assess their progress in establishing a positive school climate that promotes student learning.
I am writing to provide you with information on the student survey. The survey will be completed online using computers at school. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents will not have access to their child’s survey answers. There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review and is available online at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/school-climate/index.shtml.
The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them, and how they feel about attending school. They will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed at school and whether they have been bullied themselves.
The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify your child's subschool office by letter by January 9, 2019.
Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of school climate.
