Kindergarten Families Interested in 1st Grade Spanish Immersion
If you are a kindergarten parent and are interested in entering the lottery for Ravensworth's Spanish Immersion Program, or for an Immersion Program at a different school, please read the information below. Please note that while some schools begin Immersion in kindergarten, Ravensworth's program starts in 1st Grade.
Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in Immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at: Bailey’s, Fort Hunt, Fox Mill, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, Orange Hunt, Powell, Ravensworth, and Rose Hill elementary schools through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 28, 2019. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).
There will be an informational meeting at Ravensworth ES on Monday, January 14 at 6:00 pm in the Ravensworth ES library. For more information regarding the lottery and other school's programs please click the link below.
Enrollment criteria and procedures are available at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/world-language-immersion-programs-registration.
Holiday Technology Purchases
If you are planning to purchase any form of technology for your child over the winter break or for the holidays, the FCPS Instructional Technology Department has the following recommendation.
This Healthy Minds Blog Post provides information to help parents prepare to set expectations for any new technology gifts they may be purchasing for their children this holiday season.
Healthy Snacks at School
As we enter the time of year where some classes have winter parties to celebrate the season, we are reminded that we encourage healthy snacks to be brought in from home. Due to the number of severe food allergies, and a general desire to keep our students healthy, Ravensworth does not support the distribution of cupcakes, donuts, candy and other snacks high in sugar. Thank you for your understanding. If you were planning to bring in snacks for a holiday party, please check with your child's teacher first.

Immersion Lottery Opens for Kindergarten Students on February 1
Kindergarten families wishing to apply for the Spanish Immersion program at Ravensworth ES, or for any other Immersion program, see the information below. Ravensworth's program begins in first grade, so kindergarten students are the only children eligible at this time.
Placement in the popular Immersion programs is determined by lottery. Online registration for that lottery opens on February 1. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. All parents are required to use a SIS parent account to register their child for the Immersion Program lottery. Parents with rising first graders and kindergarteners in a NON-FCPS kindergarten or preschool will need to register their child at their base school to obtain a SIS parent account prior to registering their child for the Immersion lottery. Please note: A one-time, non-refundable pupil placement fee of $100 due upon final selection and acceptance of an out-of-boundary Immersion Program placement. Also note that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools.
You can find more information about the immersion programs, including specific languages at specific schools, answers to frequently asked questions, and a schedule of information meetings at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/world-language-immersion-programs-registration.
