News Nest December Edition

Happy Holidays and a Wish for a Great New Year

As we close out our week and month here at Forestville, we want to wish all of our families a Happy Holiday and all the best for the upcoming New Year in 2019!  As we look back at December (with many more days to go!), we were very thankful for the opportunities to see our children shine in and outside of the classroom with music concerts, performances and art work that helped represent the holiday season.  In this edition of the newsletter, you will find information about the AAP process, Rise Against Hunger  and many pictures of our students as well as the Langley Madrigals who performed for us.

Once again, thank you for your support and all of the celebratory gifts and recognitions you provided this month to our staff.  We look forward to seeing you in January!

e-Notify Emergency Messages Will Be Communicated via New Vendor

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.

Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS.  You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.

New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information.  If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.

Emergency and essential information includes:

  • Emergency
  • Delayed openings/school closings
  •  Attendance
  • Early release
  • Buses running late
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs

Langley pyramid Fundraising Goal: $29,000

Each year we package meals based on the amount of money raised from our schools in the Langley pyramid. This year’s goal is $29,000 which, in turn, will provide 100,000 meals.

How to get involved?

Donate before the End of the Year

Families may be interested in donating to this Charity Navigator 4-star non-profit organization before the end of the 2018 fiscal year. Until January 25th, parents may continue donating online here to help our fundraising efforts.

On January 7th, your child will bring home a small Rise Against Hunger collection box in which they can start to save money to be donated.

New this year, we are putting forward our “Learn to Earn” initiative. “Learn to Earn” is a message families, if they would like, can use to encourage students to earn money they would like to donate by, for example, taking on additional chores at home, shoveling snow etc.…

We will be collecting the money families would like to donate at a table in the front lobby, in the mornings, as students are arriving beginning January 8th.

Thank you ahead of time for your consideration and we look forward to sending home the Rise Against Hunger Boxes on January 7th!

Winter Concerts

Thank you to Ms. Hirt, Mr. King, and Ms. Shamlian and our wonderful choral, band and strings students who helped us bring in the holidays with cheer and songs that we are all familiar with throughout the month of December. Their performances at school were wonderful additions to the holiday spirit and always bring smiles to the faces of our faculty, families and friends. A job well done!
