HW Over Breaks:
Holiday breaks (Winter and Spring) are times designated for students, staff, and their families to rest, relax, celebrate, and participate in activities of their choice. It is a FCPS expectation that HW, major assignments, and preparation for assessments are not assigned over breaks. Ongoing work for long term assignments is permitted. In addition, major assessments/project due dates should not be given in the two days immediately following a break. If you have concerns or questions regarding homework or assessments, please reach out to the teacher or student's counselor.
Positivity Project - SELF-CONTROL
From 12/14-12/21, Rocky Run students will be talking about SELF-CONTROL.
Self-control is the act of managing behavior in a way that positively influences goal attainment and living up to standards. Possessing this strength protects people from destabilizing emotional extremes. Those with self-control are able to limit impulsive behavior. They have the ability to experience and navigate difficulty while remaining poised.
They understand that through discipline and restraint, there are greater, long-term goals that they can accomplish. Self-control is related to prudence, in that people with this strength are able to implement extended planning techniques in pursuit of difficult task completion. Self-control does not mean a lack of thoughts, feelings, or impulses; it just means you have command over them.
To read further on this character trait please view the Self-Control Character Card.

Community Raise the Ram Toy Dropoff
The National Junior Honor Society hosted its first toy/gift drive to benefit Our Neighbor's child the first week of December. Students brought toys to their Rock Time Classes and collected almost 250 toys. Congratulations to Mrs. Madden and Mrs. Oandasan's classes for winning the Rock Time Competition. On Saturday, December 8, 2018 we had our first community Raise the Ram Toy drop off and collected another 350 toys. We are so proud of our community for providing almost 600 gifts to Our Neighbor's Child, a charity that directly supports families in our community.
National Junior Honor Society Information
8th Grade students who qualify for mid-year induction into the National Junior Honor Society have been emailed the application to their fcpsschools.net account. Please have your child check their fcpsschools.net mail to see if they have been invited to apply.
Traffic and Safety Reminders
The safety of our students, staff and community members is our priority. Please note the following as you access the RRMS driveway and parking lot.
- NEW: Over the next week the initial paving for a new Kiss and Ride entrance will be taking place in the construction area. Students can access the building through door 7 and park bikes near Ramsville.
- Follow all traffic signs and directions of school staff when accessing Kiss and Ride during arrival, dismissal, and After School programs.
- No LEFT turns are permitted into the school parking lot from Poplar Tree Road at any time. Signs are posted and you may be ticketed.
- Please do not block the driveway to RRMS during after school pick up. Form a single line of traffic or park in the parking lot when picking up your child from After School activities
Under Construction: Renovation News
- Floors, paint, cabinets are being installed and finished in the section of the building adjacent to the addition. 10 new classrooms and the temporary library will open in this section after winter break.
- Soon you will see new paving near the current Kiss and Ride lane and entrance near Poplar Tree Road. This work will support the construction of a new parking lot entrance and traffic circle during the summer of 2019.
- Progress continues to be made on the new addition. The brick facade going up on the front side nearest to the existing building. We should be under roof very soon!
- Plans for the outdoor courtyard included in the building addition are in the works. We look forward to sharing the design with students very soon.
Air Quality: During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests at the beginning of December met all standards. Regular spot checks around the building have also been taking place and are all within expected limits. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month. Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.
If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.
We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
