As you are aware, this past week was Inclusive Schools Week, and students participated in learning activities that helped them better understand what inclusion means and how to ensure that all students feel included--whether it be an academic or social experience, or both.

Our PTA Special Education Parent Liaison, Mrs. Neera Datta, helps to orchestrate this week-long event each year, and this year, the theme was, "Kaleidoscope of Friends." We appreciate you, Mrs. Datta!

"If you look into a kaleidoscope, you see an infinite array of patterns of brilliant light created by repeated reflection. Kaleidoscope comes from two Greek words: kalos, meaning “beautiful,” and eidos, “shape.” And indeed, education takes on a beautiful shape when all children belong and are valued as contributing members of the school community. That is the vision of inclusive education; it drives decisions, actions, and core beliefs. Repeated reflection helps shape effective practices to meet the needs of all students. When we add the word “friends” to that image, the result is a myriad of relationships that provide opportunities for the support and growth of all children."

Administration came across two additional video resources that you might be interested in. One was shared by FCPS through its Early Childhood Special Education newsletter, whereas the other one is a critically acclaimed film that discusses the challenges physically disabled children face on the playground. “Ian” has also qualified for the Best Animated Short category in the 2019 Academy Awards. Both of these resources shine a light on a topic that implores us to take a moment--each of us--to think about how we create an inclusive environment in our homes, in our school, and in our community.

Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children

Sesame Workshop has created Sesame Street and Autism:  See Amazing in All Children.  This national initiative offers families ways to manage common challenges, to simplify everyday activities, and to grow connections and support from family, friends, and community.  Check out the parent, caregiver, and child resources below.

Ian: A Moving Story

All kids want to play. Kids with disabilities are no different. “Ian” is a short, animated film inspired by the real-life Ian, a boy with a disability determined to get to the playground despite his playmates bullying him. This film sets out to show that children with disabilities can and should be included.

Inclusive Schools Week

All FHES students created classroom kaleidoscopes to represent that they are part of one community. Although different in attributes, all students, like these kaleidoscope designs, work together to represent our diverse school!
