Things to Consider When Getting a New Phone, Computer or Gaming Device for Your Child
The holiday season is upon us, and many look forward to this time of the year --- visits with family and friends, a festive atmosphere around town, and gift-giving to celebrate the season. Often, parents see this as a great time to buy their child a new phone, computer or gaming device as a gift. A little planning ahead of time can go a long way toward ensuring that the new device provides enjoyment for your child and minimal stress for parents and caregivers.
Before offering your child the latest smartphone or gaming console, take a moment to think about how this might impact your child and your family. Some questions you might want to ask include: Are there parental controls and how do they work? Will this device be allowed in my child's bedroom? What sort of time limits should I set? Should we agree on consequences for misuse ahead of time? Are there times when a device will not be allowed?
FCPS has resources to help you think about devices with health and safety in mind. The FCPS Digital Citizenship website offers suggestions for parental controls, how to use a device contract with your child, and links to parent-teen online courses to jump-start the conversation. Common Sense Media provides a few holiday shopping tips to help you make tech choices for kids of all ages. We encourage you to use any new device yourself (maybe with your child's help!) so you understand how it is being used and what games your child is playing. Talk often with your child about his or her online use and share what you are doing as well. Building in device-free time can also help families enjoy all the season has to offer.
New technology is fun and engaging, and often provides lots of enjoyment for kids and adults alike. Before heading to the tech aisle this holiday season, make sure you’ve set your expectations and your child understands your family’s rules for use.

Principal's Letter Regarding the Upcoming VDOE School Climate Survey (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)
This winter our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education and the University of Virginia, is participating in a statewide student school climate survey. The purpose of this survey is to help schools assess their progress in establishing a positive school climate that promotes student learning.
I am writing to provide you with information on the student survey. The survey will be completed online using computers or any other internet-connected device at school. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your child answered the survey). Parents will not have access to their child’s survey answers. There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review and is available online at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/school-climate/index.shtml.
The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them, and how they feel about attending school. They will also be asked what kinds of bullying they may have observed at school and whether they have been bullied themselves.
The survey is voluntary and your child can decide not to participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by telephone 703-426-2101 or letter by January 9, 2019.
Your child will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will help us to maintain a safe, inviting, and supportive learning environment for your child.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of school climate.
(The administration window for the survey is from January 14, 2019 - February 8, 2019.)
