Rocky Run News and Updates: December 7, 2018

A note from Dr. Goodloe:

Dear Rocky Run Families:

We have had a great week at Rocky Run.  A few highlights:

  • We enjoyed wonderful winter concerts presented by our Band, Orchestra, and Choral Students.
  • Students in our College Partnership Program visited Chantilly Academy.
  • Wellness Screening was conducted for all 7th graders through our Student Services department and English classes.
  • 8 RRMS staff members attended the Virginia Society for Technology Education conference in Virginia Beach.  Thank you to PTA for the generous support.

Due Dates and Time for assignments:
As you may know Google Classroom provides a lot of flexibility with assigning due dates and times to assignments. When a teacher attaches a time to a due date it automatically sets it to “11:59pm”. This time is meant to allow for flexibility and does not mean that a student is expected to stay up late finishing the assignment. The assignment can still be accepted after the time set. We have received feedback that this due time may be causing some students stress and have asked teachers to please consider either not using the time option or setting a start of class/7:30 am day task is due for assignments. If you have questions or concerns about an assignment's due date or time, please encourage your student to talk to their teacher.

I welcome your feedback, questions, and suggestions.  Please feel free to reach out to me at anytime.  I hope to see you at Rocky Run MS very soon.

Sincerely,

Amy T. Goodloe, Ed.D

Positivity Project - HUMILITY & MODESTY

From 12/7-12/14, Rocky Run students will be talking about HUMILITY & MODESTY. The P2 definition of this trait is that you do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves.

Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

American society has overemphasized individual self-esteem to the point that narcissism is up 30% since the early 1980s.  Narcissism, a fragile and defensive variety of self-esteem, is correlated with feelings of entitlement and a belief that all one’s failures are a result of external factors. This increased focus on self and decreased focus on others is harmful to group cohesion and success. Humility, then, is vital to team, community, and societal achievement. Humble groups, composed of humble people, do what’s necessary without making a big deal of it; always remaining focused on what’s next.

To read further on this character trait please view the Humility Character Card.

Traffic and Safety Reminders

The safety of our students, staff and community members is our priority.    Please note the following as you access the RRMS driveway and parking lot.

  • NEW:  Over the next week the initial paving for a new Kiss and Ride entrance will be taking place in the construction area.  Students can access the building through door 7 and park bikes near Ramsville.
  • Follow all traffic signs and directions of school staff when accessing Kiss and Ride during arrival, dismissal, and After School programs.
  • No LEFT turns are permitted into the school parking lot from Poplar Tree Road at any time.  Signs are posted and you may be ticketed.
  • Please do not block the driveway to RRMS during after school pick up.  Form a single line of traffic or park in the parking lot when picking up your child from After School activities

Under Construction: Renovation News

  • Floors, paint, cabinets are being installed and finished in the section of the building adjacent to the addition. 10 new classrooms and the temporary library will open in this section after winter break.
  • Soon you will see new paving near the current Kiss and Ride lane and entrance near Poplar Tree Road. This work will support the construction of a new parking lot entrance and traffic circle during the summer of 2019.
  • Progress continues to be made on the new addition. The brick facade going up on the front side nearest to the existing building. We should be under roof very soon!
  • Plans for the outdoor courtyard included in the building addition are in the works.  We look forward to sharing the design with students very soon.

Air Quality:  During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests at the beginning of December met all standards. The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month.  Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.

If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.

We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
