Happy Winter - I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. As this year is quickly coming to a close and the holidays are upon us, it's a great time to be thankful and reflective. I am grateful and humbled to serve parents, staff and all students in the Lee District community.

I hope to see you this week at my Kaufax Koffee. I also want to wish you and your family an enjoyable winter break and look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Tammy

Channel 4 News visited Groveton Elementary School to visit Sueann Tupy’s classroom. Her classroom is a peaceful, safe place, complete with a singing bowl, battery powered candles, white noise, and comfortable places to unwind. Ms. Tupy is a 23-year veteran teacher and is in her first year running the CALM (Classrooms and Community Achieving Lifelong Mindfulness) program at Groveton, combining 20 years of practicing yoga and mindfulness with her experience as a classroom teacher to help students and faculty alike.

Purple Star Lee District Schools

Fourteen Fairfax County public schools are among 59 schools in Virginia recognized as Purple Star schools, indicating they are military-friendly schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families. The recognition was announced by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

Congratulations to the three Lee District schools who were among these schools to receive the Purple Star: Clermont Elementary, Hayfield Secondary, and Lane Elementary.

To qualify for a Purple Star, schools must have a trained staff member as a primary point of contact for military families and students who also serves as a liaison between the school and local military communities. Schools must also demonstrate their commitment to meeting the needs of military students by providing resources and programming on issues important to military families, such as transitions and academic planning.
