e-Notify Emergency Messages

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.

Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS.  You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.

New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information.  If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.

Emergency and essential information includes:

  • Emergency
  • Delayed openings/school closings
  •  Attendance
  • Early release
  • Buses running late
  • Low lunch balance
  • Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs
  • Back to school information
  • Important testing dates

If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.

As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts. Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.

ANGST: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety

On Thursday, January 24th at 7:00 p.m. (snow date: Tuesday, January 29th) in the Woodson Auditorium, join us for a free screening of ANGST, a film about anxiety, truth & hope. https://angstmovie.com/

This documentary, produced by IndieFlix, is for all parents and guardians of students in grades K-12 and students over the age of 13.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., impacting 54 percent of females and 46 percent of males, with age seven being the median age of onset, according to the World Health Organization. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, only one-third of those suffering receive treatment. Everyone involved in the development of “Angst” has a personal experience with anxiety – from the producers to the interviewees.

Representatives will be available after the screening to provide resources to support families.

For more information about this event, please contact Woodson Director of Student Services, Beth Lash at bllash@fcps.edu.

Latin Competition

Virginia Junior Classical League Convention Report

The November 2018 Virginia Junior Classical League Convention hosted almost 2,000 Latin students from all over the state, brought together to learn and celebrate the language and culture of the Romans.

Students at all levels of Latin received prizes for their amazing work on academic tests and in creative arts competitions. A team made up of students from all levels of Latin placed in the top 10 teams at Street Certamen, a fast and furious quiz bowl for Latin.

Rory McAlevy and Kenneth Tieu took 1st place in Roll Call, representing Woodson in the Spirit Competition where students write and perform skits, creating costumes and props, to represent both the Convention theme (Bees are not solitary creatures) and their school. They wrote their own lyrics paying tribute to Freddie Mercury, and dressing as bees to turn “We Will Rock You” into “We are Woodson, Bzzz”.

Congratulations to Ashley Lee who was elected at Convention to the Virginia Junior Classical League Executive Board, where she will serve as Secretary, organizing events for ALL Latin students around the state from 2018-2020!
