Our students have enjoyed learning about humility this week -- and with one week to go everyone is getting excited about winter break! The last character strength for 2018 is one that we think is probably quite useful for us all this time of year: SELF-CONTROL.
Self-control is the act of managing behavior in a way that positively influences goal attainment and living up to standards. Possessing this strength protects people from destabilizing emotional extremes. Those with self-control are able to limit impulsive behavior. They have the ability to experience and navigate difficulty while remaining poised.
They understand that through discipline and restraint, there are greater, long-term goals that they can accomplish. Self-control is related to prudence, in that people with this strength are able to implement extended planning techniques in pursuit of difficult task completion. Self-control does not mean a lack of thoughts, feelings, or impulses; it just means you have command over them.
We couldn't resist sharing pictures from this past Tuesday. We enjoyed a visit from the Fairfax County Police Department to thank us for donating to the FCPD Toy Drive and the students loved it! Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their friends arrived by motorcycle with a full police escort! As they approached we heard their police sirens and when we saw the police lights all of the students and teachers cheered! It sure was a fun visit!
Our team loves working with the “big kids” at CPES and helping them as they prepare to transition to middle school. We have a challenging curriculum that allows our students to think critically and to learn to see things from multiple perspectives. We really stress to our students the importance of setting a good example for the younger kids in the school, and they take this responsibility seriously. We always look forward to our end-of-year festivities, when we are able to celebrate all of the successes our students have had in their elementary school careers!
Here is a little bit about the teachers on the super 6th grade team!
Lynne Hook and Christine Abt were two of the founding members of Colin Powell Elementary when the school opened its doors back in 2003. They were the only two 6th grade teachers that year and they are still going strong on the 6th grade team today!
Including her time as a P.E. teacher and counselor, Lynne Hook has been encouraging and believing in children for an incredible 40 years! She is a former triathlete who still enjoys swimming and biking regularly. Mrs. Hook loves playing bridge with her neighbors and spending time with her husband at their beach house in Delaware.
Christine Abt has been molding children’s minds in Fairfax County for nearly three decades. She and her husband are empty-nesters, but they enjoy traveling to see their son at UVA and going to watch their daughter play soccer for JMU. Mrs. Abt loves watching the U.S. national soccer teams and rooting for the New York Giants.
Kristin Bunch joined the Powell family in 2006. In her 12 years at CPES, Mrs. Bunch is proud of the relationships she has built with her students. She loves cheering on the Washington Capitals and spending time with her husband and their rambunctious three-year-old son.
Dave Buschenfeldt completed his student teaching here at Powell and was welcomed to the 6th grade team in the fall of 2011. Mr. B’s life outside of school is jam-packed as he and his wife are raising a 7-month-old daughter and a 2-year-old puppy, but he still does his best to find time to root for all of his beloved Boston sports teams.
Last but not least, Esther Chung came to Colin Powell this year to be our first 6th grade Korean immersion teacher. Ms. Chung has fit seamlessly into the Powell community and she has been a wonderful addition to the super 6th grade team! She and her husband love to travel and try new foods, and they are enjoying being newlyweds.
Korean Immersion Application Process for School Year 2019 -2020
Parents, please note kindergarteners, CURRENTLY ENROLLED in the Korean Immersion program at Colin Powell, SHOULD NOT complete the online application process again. Your child will automatically be enrolled in the first grade Korean Immersion program upon your completion of a survey coming in January 2019.
Parents of kindergarteners who are NOT CURRENTLY ENROLLED in the Korean Immersion program at Colin Powell, but wish to apply for the 2019 -2020 school year, should follow the instructions below.
Each year, rising kindergarteners and first graders have the chance to participate in Immersion programs available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish offered at: Bailey’s, Fort Hunt, Fox Mill, Great Falls, Kent Gardens, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, Orange Hunt, Powell, Ravensworth, and Rose Hill elementary schools through a county-wide lottery process. Online registration for this lottery process opens on January 28, 2019. Registration is open to all rising kindergarteners and first graders living in Fairfax County. A SIS account is required to complete the application. If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required. Please be aware that FCPS does not provide transportation for students who reside outside the attendance area of the immersion schools and a one-time fee of $100 must be paid upon acceptance of an out-of-boundary placement (see Notice 5922).
In the Immersion Program, children spend half of the day in the target language learning math, science, and health. Target language arts skills are integrated in the content area skills. The other half of the day is spent learning in English focusing on English language arts and social studies. The instructional program follows the Fairfax County Public Schools Program of Studies at each grade level. Math, science, and health were chosen because they use manipulatives and concrete, hands-on activities, both of which help with the natural second language acquisition process. Students are able to connect the skills learned across both languages.
Program Sites and Informational Meetings

Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.
Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS. You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.
New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information. If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.
Emergency and essential information includes:
- Emergency
- Delayed openings/school closings
- Attendance
- Early release
- Buses running late
- Low lunch balance
- Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs
- Back to school information
- Important testing dates
If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.
As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts. Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.
