Louise Archer Sunshine News #6

holiday singing

Our students have had some wonderful opportunities to share their talents in our community this holiday season! They will perform again at the National Tree in DC on December 20th at 7pm.

From the Principal's Desk:

It’s time to close out one calendar year and begin another.  Where did the year go?  Now is a great opportunity to reflect on the past year, while looking towards the New Year with hope and anticipation.  When reflecting on this past calendar year at Louise Archer, we realize the many talents and gifts our students have brought with them each day to our school.  We have cherished seeing many smiling faces and students engaged in learning every single day.

We also have benefitted greatly from your generous gift of time, support, and expertise as you set a positive example for your children.  Please continue to share these talents and gifts with others so they too, can feel the warmth of the Louise Archer community.  On behalf of all of the staff at Louise Archer, we want to thank you for the many acts of kindness that have enriched the lives not only of our school, but the entire Vienna community.  We hope that you and your family enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!  We look forward to seeing you in 2019!

Announcements

Geography Bee

We are excited to share that fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students will have the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee this January. Review materials for this can be found on the Louise Archer website under Student Links in the Social Studies section, or click here. Students are encouraged to start preparing now. Participating students will take part in the qualifying round between January 14 and January 24. The top qualifying student from each class will move on to participate in the school geography bee on Monday, January 28. Our school winner will then take a qualifying test to determine eligibility for the state level bee.

What's Happening in Art Class?

During the first half of the year, Art students will be refining their drawing skills. Most grades have already drawn a self-portrait of some kind. Some portraits were more traditional. For example, kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders learned the proportions of the face and/or body while drawing themselves. Older grades took the project a bit further. Fourth graders drew themselves as adults at their dream jobs. Fifth graders drew only their shoes, which can actually illustrate a lot about their personalities. Sixth graders created micrography portraits, in which the line drawings of themselves are created with text. Projects are going to get a little bit messier as the year progresses. Please remind students not to wear their favorite outfits on the day that they have Art class. Also, the Art room welcomes any donations of anti-bacterial wipes to clean clay and paint off of tables at the end of each day. We greatly appreciate our PTA mini-grant of nice pens, color printer ink, and a donated Ipad which students will use to find reference photos for Art projects. Thank you Louise Archer families for your support.  Please keep an eye out on the Louise Archer Twitter page for photos of masterpieces being created in Art class!

Hour of Code

National Computer Science (CS) Education Week is December 3-9, 2018. CS Week is an important opportunity to integrate computer science and coding skills in grades K-12. Students at Louise Archer will be joining an estimated ten percent of students around the world to celebrate by doing an Hour of Code. It's an opportunity for every child to learn how the technology around us works. We are committed to providing our students with the opportunitites to engage in essential 21st century skills. During the Hour of Code, students will be creating their own apps or games. These interactive, hands-on activities allow our students to learn computational thinking skills in an appropachable way.  You can learn more about the event at http://code.org.
