Recognition of National Inclusive Schools Week December 3-7
Inclusive Schools Week (ISW) is an annual event which is held each year during the first full week in December. Since its inception in 2001, Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population.
This year’s Inclusive Schools Week theme is Kaleidoscope of Friends. If you look into a kaleidoscope, you see an infinite array of patterns of brilliant light created by repeated reflection. Kaleidoscope comes from two Greek words: kalos, meaning “beautiful,” and eidos, “shape.” And indeed, education takes on a beautiful shape when all children belong and are valued as contributing members of the school community. That is the vision of inclusive education; it drives decisions, actions, and core beliefs.
Please join the Fairhill Family for Kaleidoscope Day, Friday, December 7. Students and Staff should wear tie-die or bright colors to school on Friday in celebration of inclusive schools week.

e-Notify Emergency Messages Will Be Communicated via New Vendor Beginning December 14
Fairfax County Public Schools will be moving to a new vendor to provide emergency and essential email, text, and phone notifications beginning December 14, 2018. If you currently receive emergency and essential communications via email, text, or phone, you do not need to do anything as you will continue to receive this information.
Parents and guardians who have included a cellphone number (in the cellphone field) on a student’s emergency care card will receive a text message on December 14 to confirm the account is set up to receive text messages from FCPS. You do not need to do anything when you receive the text message from the new vendor, School Messenger, on December 14th. If you do not receive a text message, please check the contact information listed on your child’s emergency care card in weCare. Your cellphone number must be listed in the cellphone field in order to receive text messages from FCPS.
New this year, parents can enter their student’s cellphone number in weCare so that their student will also receive text messages for delayed openings, school closings, and late bus notifications. The student’s cellphone number will need to be entered in Section 4, under Additional Information. If the student’s cellphone is listed in weCare, they will also receive the text message on December 14.
Emergency and essential information includes:
- Emergency
- Delayed openings/school closings
- Attendance
- Early release
- Buses running late
- Low lunch balance
- Power, telephone, internet outages or facility repairs
- Back to school information
- Important testing dates
If you have recently changed your contact information, please be sure to update the emergency contact information in weCare.
As a reminder, in addition to email and text messages, all FCPS weather delays and openings are also posted on Twitter, Facebook, FCPS website, school websites, and local radio and television broadcasts. Read more about Weather Cancellation Procedures.

Portrait of a Tiger
Ms. Gihea Schwartz, School Counselor
When did you realize you wanted to become a school counselor?
I realized I wanted to be a school counselor when I started graduate school in mental health counseling. Looking back at my experiences volunteering in my church as a teenager, I really enjoyed working with children and youth and was grateful for the opportunity to switch fields.
What made you want to work in in an elementary school?
In graduate school, I had an internship working in an elementary school in FCPS and that experience was exciting and so much fun. My supervisor at the school who was an elementary school counselor was supportive and helped me to see elementary school counseling as a career worth pursuing.
Name something you would like to improve upon.
I am always working on increasing my physical strength and fitness by exercising regularly even when life gets hectic.
Which school/university did you attend?
I went to Agnes Scott College for undergraduate study majoring in political science and The George Washington University for a master’s degree in school counseling.
What do you think of Fairhill? Why do you think this is the right school for you?
I fell in love with Fairhill the moment I saw the school and visited almost 12 years ago. Fairhill is a warm and energetic school where relationships matter – this is the where I am meant to be.
