Oboe Player Part of Youth Fellowship Program
Olivia Leake, an oboe player and senior at Hayfield Secondary, was selected to take part in the chamber NSO (National Symphony Orchestra) group of the Youth Fellowship Program at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. This opportunity allows her to perform in a chamber group with other musicians, receive lessons from professional musicians, and attend NSO rehearsals and meetings with renowned artists and conductors. Olivia plans to pursue Oboe performance after graduation.
Hayfield Awarded the Virginia Purple Star
Hayfield Secondary School is one of 59 schools in Virginia, and the only high school in FCPS that was awarded the Virginia Purple Star designation in October! The Purple Star designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families. More information about this award and the other schools recognized in Virginia is found here. More information about the FCPS schools recognized is found here.
 Cross Curricular Celebration
On November 1 and 2, middle school teachers Alyssa Harrop (Family and Consumer Science) and Shelly Pennow (Spanish) collaborated in order to treat their students to Hayfield’s first Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration. A beautifully decorated altar was set up in the gourmet foods classroom, and students were asked to bring in and place a photo on the altar of either a deceased loved one, someone they admire, or a photo of their own family. Each class also provided “ofrendas” (offering) to share with one another. The students colored their “calaveras” (skulls) to the sounds of mariachi music and enjoyed the company and delicious treats, complete with Pan de Muerto, Bread of the Dead.

 Suma Gakuen Visited Hayfield
On Friday, November 16 Hayfield hosted their sixth Suma Gakuen visit from Kobe, Japan. The snow storm the previous day and the two hour delay opening did not damper this event. The temperature raised, and it turned out to be a beautiful day during the Cherry Blossom ceremony right outside of Mr. Grimm’s office. Hayfield is honored to have six Cherry Blossom Trees donated from All Nippon Airways through the National Cherry Blossom Festival organization to cerebrate Suma Gakuen's and Hayfield's friendship. There are four trees in front of the school and two in the back. The ceremony took place during Suma Gakuen’s visit. The environmental Club will be taking care of these trees and we hope everyone will enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms blooming every spring. After the Cherry Blossom ceremony, the Japanese students participated in cultural presentations in the auditorium and ate lunch together with their partners. It was a very special and memorable day for these students. Thank you for visiting us, Suma Gakuen! [Please follow “hayfield_SS_Japanese” and “hssenvironmental” on Instagram!]
