Last Chance to Make Post-Open Enrollment Corrections

While Open Enrollment ended on November 9, you have a final opportunity this week to make corrections to your 2019 elections in UConnect. Confirmation of your 2019 benefits elections were sent to your FCPS email account last week. Please review that email to ensure your 2019 elections are correct. The information is also available in UConnect.

If you need to make corrections to your plan, covered dependents, or flexible spending account enrollment, log in to UConnect and enter your corrections by 4:30 p.m. on November 30. Please refer to the Benefit Publications website, if you need more information regarding premiums and benefit changes. Questions? Help Support Homeless Students for the Holidays!

More than 1,100 homeless children are enrolled in FCPS; 298 of them are without a parent or guardian. As part of the mission of the Foundation for FCPS to serve our kids in need, FCPS' Homeless Liaison Office is collecting gift cards to give to our homeless or unaccompanied youth for their basic needs throughout the year. Here's how you can help:

  • Purchase as many gift cards, in any amount, as you would like. (Walmart, Target, and grocery story gift cards are suggested.) Be sure to mark the value on the back of the card(s).
  • Send gift cards to Patti Parisi, Financial Services, Gatehouse, Room 4214; Tina West, Special Services, Willow Oaks, Room 2109; or Amy Verdin, Foundation for FCPS, Gatehouse, Suite 5101.
  • No time to shop? Send cash or checks to The Foundation for FCPS, or donate online. The Homeless Liaison Office will do the shopping for you.

Last year, because of the kindness and generosity of FCPS employees, families, and friends, more than $7,200 in cash and gift cards was collected. We hope you'll help again this year! Please contact Patti Parisi, 571-423-3750, with questions.

#OurFCPS Faces: Dot Sherman

Bus Driver Dot Sherman

Dot Sherman has been a bus driver at FCPS for almost 20 years, and this is her second career! She says, “I became a school bus driver to help out my friend, who was the principal of Willow Springs ES when the school was just opening. [...] I began to love working with [the kids] and trying to help them become honorable and decent people. I really do love it.” Dot also loves the full-time benefits for part-time work, flexible schedule, paid holidays, and ability to bring her preschool-age grandchildren on the bus when necessary.

We were thrilled to meet Dot and film her during her morning run. Watch Dot in action. She was also featured in an article in the "Golden Gazette," a Fairfax County government publication. (Her story is on Page 21.)

Thanks so much, Dot, for being a driving force in education!

Cultural Proficiency Module II Makeup Sessions

Cultural Proficiency Module II–The Guiding Principles is required professional development (PD) for all FCPS employees. It should have been facilitated in schools and offices in the 2017-18 school year. For new employees and those who missed the PD at their sites, principals and program managers have the following options:

  • Conduct a Cultural Proficiency Module II session on site, led by the facilitator who was trained in 2017-18.
  • Direct new employees and those who still need this PD to attend a makeup session individually. Cultural Proficiency Module II makeup sessions will be offered monthly through MyPLT, under course #IS-CP2000 Cultural Proficiency Module II–The Guiding Principles. Substitutes will not be provided.

Please contact Nina Thomas with questions at JAThomas1@fcps.edu or
