Inclusive Schools Week

Inclusive Schools Week is celebrated annually around the country. This year Oak Hill will be participating in Inclusive Schools Week from December 3-7. This entire week is to celebrate and promote acceptance and inclusion of the diverse population we have at Oak Hill. We also hope this week will encourage conversations about how we can be more accepting and appreciative of those who are different from us. Each day of the Inclusion Week, students and staff are encouraged to wear the various colors listed below. The celebration of Inclusive Schools Week will create a fundamental commitment to relationships among staff, students and the community of Oak Hill. #ISW2018 #allinOHES

Monday: Wear Red for Respect

Tuesday: Wear Green for Gifts

Wednesday: Wear Blue for Belonging

Thursday: Wear Purple for Positivity

Friday: Wear Oak Hill Spirit Wear

Free Screening of Youth Anxiety Movie "Angst"

All teens experience some amount of anxiety – it’s a normal reaction to stress. But when temporary worries or fears become pervasive and interfere with relationships, schoolwork and health, anxiety disorders are at play. Anxiety disorders are highly common and highly treatable, yet most who suffer don’t seek assistance. How can we as a community recognize the signs of this mental health epidemic and what resources are available? In their yearlong focus on youth anxiety, the Safe Community Coalition, in conjunction with the McLean High School PTSA, is hosting a free showing of the IndieFlix Original Film Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety on Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m. in the McLean High School auditorium. This important, eye-opening documentary features students affected by anxiety, mental health professionals and Olympic athlete and mental health advocate Michael Phelps in opening up the conversation and providing hope around a topic many find difficult to discuss.

Following the movie, a panel of mental health professionals from McLean High School and the community will lead a panel discussion and question and answer session to provide further information. This event is free and recommended for 6th grade and up and is expected to be well attended.

Advanced Academic Parent Information Meeting

Mrs. Wheeler, Oak Hill’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, will hold a parent info session on Tuesday, December 11, from 9:00-9:45 in the school café.  At this session, she will provide specific information as to the Level IV screening/referral process for grades 2-6 and what documentation parents may submit.  Just a reminder,  all referral forms and any supporting documentation are due to Mrs. Wheeler at school by COB on January 10, 2019.  Please do not wait for fall test scores to arrive. 3rd art

Third graders beginning to add inspiring, positive messages to their portraits.

Art News

Oak Hill's Art Classes have been hard at work creating, designing and learning about “self-portraits”. Grade 1 has completed cut paper replicas of themselves while Grades 3 and 6 have created “abstract” self portraits. Grade 2 has made some very expressive self portrait paintings while Grade 3 painted themselves while attending a “cultural celebration”. We are looking forward to finishing up these fine works and beginning our CLAY unit.
