Weekly Photos

Dear CES,

It was amazing to see everyone at the Thanksgiving Luncheons the last two days. It was a true illustration of #OurCES! We are very thankful for all of the CES students and families.

Please join us for the next Family Dinner and STEAM Night on Tuesday, November 27th at 5:30 pm. We will provide the main course (soup) and ask that everyone else bring something to share. Please RSVP to Mrs. Settlemyre at mjsettlemyre@fcps.edu.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Booster

November 26, 2018

The Boosterthon team extended a very special final challenge: The class with the most new pledges by the Fun Run will earn a giant soccer ball for them to use at recess for the rest of the school year! We are SO CLOSE to our school goal, so please consider connecting your student to one or two more sponsors before our Fun Run on Monday, 11/26.

Just a reminder, you can re-watch any of the awesome character videos with your student on funrun.com and talk to them more about what they learned in the MindSpark Mystery Lab!

help wanted

There are a number of opportunities to get involved with our school. Please consider one or more of these opportunities. You can sign up for any (or all) of these opportunities on the PTA Volunteer page https://centrevillees.ptboard.com/sgnvw.

Winter Craft & Movie Night (one time event)

Parents and or students in 6th grade or above are invited to help make this event a success. There are a variety of opportunities to lend a hand. If you want to help but the time slots aren't convenient, email Shawna Garrett and she'll be happy to work with you. cesvp1@gmail.com or call 703-835-0165.

After-School Enrichment Program Co-Leader (ongoing role)

We have an immediate need for a helper to assist our 2nd Vice President with after school activities from now until the end of the school year. Most of the help needed is administrative (putting together fliers, rosters, etc) and can be done from home with the possibility of some assistance needed in the school after school hours during the first week that after school activities begin. If you are interested or would like more information before signing up, please email Ciarra at cesptavp2@gmail.com.

Standing Rules Committee (limited time commitment)

Standing rules provide for the day-by-day operation of our PTA. Procedures that are not covered in our bylaws, but are a general policy or way of operating belong in standing rules. This committee will consist of 5-8 current PTA members and will meet three (3) times. Twice with the board and then once without the board. The chairman of this committee, elected by members of the committee, will then share the decided upon Standing Rules at a General PTA Meeting to be adopted. We request to have members sign up for this committee no later than December 13th, 2018.

Nomination Committee (limited time commitment)

We will need a nominating committee consisting of 3 members by December 13, 2018. The committee will elect its own chairman. The committee will nominate an eligible person for each office to be filled for the 2019-2020 school year and report its nominees at the April regular PTA meeting. At the election meeting in May 2019, additional nominations may be made from the floor. If you are interested in helping our PTA continue to be successful, please consider joining this committee as stated in our bylaws.

This past week our students continued to focused on Gratitude.

WHAT DOES GRATITUDE MEAN?

Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship- strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Gratitude is sometimes resisted, especially in more self- sufficient and independent cultures, due to not wanting to experience a sense of indebtedness. However, gratitude is less about feeling indebted and more about being aware of the consideration, kindness, and generosity of others. It’s also important to note that gratitude is not about ignoring the negative aspects of life; it’s simply being aware of and thankful for what is good.
