Principal's Message

2018 Wolftrap Time Capsule

Dear Wolftrap Families:

TIME CAPSULE: On November 2, we reburied our time capsule! It was originally buried in 1976 and then re-buried in 2001. We opened it in honor of our 50th anniversary and left instructions for it to be reopened in 2043, in honor of our 75th anniversary. We collected artifacts from each grade level to represent the year 2018. We also included an iPhone with pictures and videos. Additionally, each homeroom created a newsletter to capture examples of popular songs, food, fashion, sport teams, and books. Copies of the newsletters are on display in the display case next to the library. In order to better preserve the artifacts, we vacuum-sealed all of the contents, laminated all of the paper, and purchased a state of the art time capsule. Thank you to the PTA for sharing the cost! This was an exciting undertaking and we hope that the future generations of Wolftrap students will enjoy it!

MAKE-UP PICTURE DAY: If your child was absent on Picture Day in September, is new to the school, or would like to have pictures retaken, the photographer will be available on Friday, December 7. If you would like to participate, please have your child bring the full contents of the original package on that day.

NO HOMEWORK POLICY OVER BREAKS: Once again, all nine schools in the Madison Pyramid have adopted a policy and communicated to teachers that we will have no homework over Thanksgiving, winter break and spring break. We want our students to spend time with their families and have the opportunity to take a break from school work. We want our teachers to decompress and put their lesson plan books and laptops away for a few days while they spend time with their families and friends as well.

OPEN HOUSE/BOOK FAIR: It was wonderful to see so many families attending Open House this year. Thank you for your contributions of food to compile 120 Thanksgiving bags for families at our sister school!

AMAZON SMILES: When making holiday purchases this season, please consider supporting Wolftrap! Shopping through Amazon Smiles will get 0.5% of every purchase to Wolftrap Elementary PTA. When you select your charity, simply search Wolftrap Elem PTA. Link here to sign up for Amazon Smiles and begin the shopping and giving to Wolftrap PTA!

I wish you all a happy and restful Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki
Principal

Message from the PTA

National PTA

Wow! What a week last week. We had another successful Dining for Dollars and opened the Book Fair only to be thwarted by Mother Nature (although the kids loved having the snow day!). Luckily our hardworking and persistent Book Fair team worked with the vendor and all of our volunteers to extend the schedule and allow for the Book Fair to be open this week as well! The Book Fair will be open today (Nov. 19th) and tomorrow (Nov. 20th) during the Open Houses and have extended hours tonight. New hours are posted below for your reference. Also of note, today is the deadline for Original Works orders. You still have time- don’t miss out on this great opportunity to support the school and get a keepsake item of your child’s artwork at the same time. Submit them here: https://www.originalworks.com/gallerylogin/. Thank you to all of the volunteers who make those events and programs possible and to all of the parents who support them.

Extended Book Fair Hours

Monday November 19th: 9:00am – 6:00pm
Tuesday November 20th: 9:00am – 1:00pm

This week in our message in addition to the above WES PTA items, we wanted to highlight two items from a Fairfax County Council PTA (FCCPTA) perspective.

1. Education Survey: This is a survey put out by the FCCPTA to better understand parent opinion and concerns regarding topics such as class size, technology, curriculum, advanced academics, and special education. The responses will guide FCCPTA engagement with FCPS, the school board, Board of Supervisors and the State of Virginia. In addition, your local PTA will receive school specific data to guide their planning and activities. It is available in multiple languages and all responses are anonymous. It is open now through December 7th! If you have a few moments and want your voice heard by the FCCPTA, you can fill it out here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WHZ7NNT

If you have any questions, contact Matt Dunne, vp.advocacy@fccpta.org.

2.  Advocacy Night: Monday, December 3rd, FCCPTA presents a unique opportunity for Fairfax County families and education supporters to learn about the school budget process and share what matters to them. Elected officials from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the FCPS School Board representing each district have been invited. Event begins at 7pm at Fairfax County Government Center. Register and find out more information here: Fairfax County Advocacy Night

As always, please reach out should you have any questions about the PTA or how to get involved: president@wolftrappta.org.

Veteran's Day Assembly

2018 Wolftrap Veterans Day

Thirty-five fabulous sixth grade students worked with Mrs. Khuluki to design all aspects of the Veteran’s Day assembly. These students volunteered for one of four roles: speaking, singing, artistic design and decorations. They practiced before and during school and we are so proud of the assembly that they produced. We were able to honor the veterans of the Wolftrap community in a respectful assembly which was attended by students in grades 3-6. Thank you to the veterans who participated in our interview process and all of the families who submitted pictures and posters for the Wall of Valor. Thank you to the PTA committee who decorated the display case and the cafeteria. Also, thank you to our music teachers, Ms. Barker and Ms. Chambers, for teaching the students all of the songs.

Bike Drive

Donate Your Unwanted Bike to Help Others: The Committee for Helping Others (CHO) will be holding its final day of its Bike Drive on November 24. Make the holidays a little better this year for a less fortunate child in our community. If you have a gently-used bike in good riding condition that you no longer need, let CHO direct it to someone who will really appreciate it.   See flyer for details.

Walking Wednesday
