Each month, students in the various Academy classes take on a health issue to educate others. November is diabetes awareness month and will be supported by the Pharmacy Technician students.
Wear blue on Friday's in support of this issue.
Women in Homeland Security and the Transportation Safety Administration offered rare access for 13 Falls Church Academy Criminal Justice students with a behind the scenes look at the security process at Dulles International Airport and careers with the TSA. On November 1, Level 2 Criminal Justice students met at Dulles International Airport and joined TSA representatives through security check-points, displays of contraband from airline passengers and a meeting with K-9 and their handlers whose job it is to sniff out bombs and drugs attempting to be brought on aircraft.
Some students provided their reflection of the event that included; “On the trip to the TSA I enjoyed the amount of information that was given to us about career paths and options. I also enjoyed seeing the technology that is used throughout the airport for security.” “I am actually considering applying to work with TSA after high school because of all that I saw really interested me. I think it would be a nice way to start my career.” “It was nice to hear from the people who worked there to learn their opinion of their career path with TSA.”
On Monday, November 5, five Academy teachers and 13 student volunteers helped 27 FCPS teachers become CPR certified as part of their recertification process. This activity provided a way to raise funds for Falls Church Academy HOSA. With only a week of advertising this was a big success and brought in $710 for the organization which provides opportunities for students interested in healthcare careers. The Academy plans to do a larger CPR Certification event in the spring.
Falls Church Academy Dental Careers students provided an educational presentation to students in the PD Pod or Physically Disabled Program at Falls Church Academy. The program began with a presentation on good nutrition, healthy tooth care involving brushing and flossing and the use of adaptive items that help them in keeping with their ability needs. After this presentation in the PD Pod, these students were brought to the Dental Careers classroom to experience a dental chair and gain insight into what a dental exam looks and feels like.
Falls Church Academy is one of three Academy's in Fairfax County to receive a Hal S3201 Advanced Multipurpose Patient Simulator. Hal, as he is known by those who learn from him, works as a simulator of airway, breathing, circulation, drug recognition and vital signs scenarios, just like a real patient. He is able to provide immediate simulated feedback through instructor or automatically programmed modes and is able to communicate with his caregivers via vocal responses that are instructor provided or pre-programmed responses, in addition he can respond in multiple languages.
Practical Nursing and Patient Care Technician Instructor Jackie Portnoy said "Hal is much more than an expensive piece of equipment. Students who are studying to be healthcare workers must possess advanced critical thinking skills also referred to as clinical reasoning. Hal enables students to practice those skills in safe simulated care scenarios. Student engagement is at its peak when students are able to practice advanced skills in a safe environment."
Academy students in Medical Assistant, Exploring Health Science, Patient Care Technician and Emergency Medical Technology will have the opportunity to work with Hal throughout the year as an enhancement to the classroom instruction.
Hal was made available through a combination of funding from the Claude Moore Foundation and Perkins.
