Dear Willow Springs,
What a busy and exciting week we’ve had here at Willow Springs! We started the week honoring Veterans and celebrating the many connections that students and staff have to our brave military personnel. From special segments on our WSES morning news, hosting guest speakers and writing thank you letters, to featuring patriotic multimedia lobby displays, decorating cards, and creating special bulletin boards and lobby displays, our teachers and students took time to say “thank you” to those who sacrifice so much for our freedoms.
And how about the snow! In November no less! This unexpected early taste of winter was a good reminder to come up with a family action plan in case of weather-related closings and delays. A great way to keep up to date on Fairfax County School inclement weather alerts and bus delays is by downloading the FCPS mobile app, visiting our website, or following @fcpsnews on Twitter.
Tonight our 5th grade teachers and their students will celebrate literacy during their annual Extreme Reading event. Loaded up with books, sleeping bags, pillows, and snacks, students will spend the first part of their evening with teachers and friends reading their favorite books. Later, they will have the opportunity to listen to guest story teller Gary Loyd, enjoy some pizza in the cafeteria, and participate in reading related relay games. It’s always a fun time when our school lobby is filled with students curled up in sleeping bags, enjoying a good book.
We love our clubs at Willow Springs! We’re so proud of the broad participation we see from our students and parents, and it plays a crucial role in realizing one of our core goals which is to develop each child in a variety of ways. If your child is participating in school clubs, please remember proper etiquette when picking up your child. Remember, no parking in fire lanes, which is unsafe should an emergency arise. School security does their very best to keep us all safe so please take advantage of the ample parking spaces available at pickup. We take pride in providing the safest environment possible and would appreciate your cooperation by finding an open parking space, and then coming inside to greet your child with a smile.
Next week, students will attend school all day on Monday and Tuesday and then Thanksgiving break with our families begins on Wednesday, Nov 21st.

Do you sometimes eat lunch with your child in the cafeteria?
Please consider volunteering to help out in the cafeteria on the Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, Monday, November 19th and Tuesday, November 20th. We are short a cafeteria hostess on these days so the extra hands would be helpful. No training required, the hostess will give you a bucket with condiments, etc. to pass out as kids raise their hands for help.
Hope to see you in the cafeteria! The kids love seeing new faces!
6th Grade Student, Grace Choi, Designs WSES 2018-19 Music T-Shirt
Thank you to all of the band, chorus, and strings students who submitted designs for our new t-shirt. The winner of the design contest is Grace Choi. Congratulations, Grace!
PTA President Sackie Visits Daughter's Classroom in Uniform
Our amazing PTA President, Marci Sackie, took time out of her busy day to visit her daughter's classroom on Veterans Day. We appreciate all you do for our school and thank you for your service to our country, Marci. We salute you!
