Floris Friday FYI!

Floris Barbecue

Thank you Floris cafeteria staff and Energy Zone for a wonderful barbecue!

Dear Floris Families -

We’ve had another busy week here at Floris!  We would like to start by thanking our Cafeteria Manager, Joel Marques, and his team for hosting our third annual food service “Kick off to Fall” barbecue. We had a wonderful turnout of parents. Thank you for supporting our Food and Nutrition program.

This week we were honored by the Herndon Connection. Floris was featured on the front page and there was an article regarding our fabulous Under the Sea mural. You can view the online article here Herndon Connection - Floris Mural.

By now, you have hopefully received an invitation to our annual Thanksgiving luncheon next Thursday, November 15th. We look forward to sharing good food and conversation together with our families. If you have not done so already, you can purchase your ticket(s) by completing a reservation form (found in the front office) and submitting payment ($4.50/meal) in the form of exact change/cash or check made payable to Floris Elementary Food Services to the school office no later than Monday, November 12th.  Lunch cards will be accepted the day of the luncheon for students only. Tickets can be picked up in the lobby on the day of the event. NO tickets will be sent home and NO tickets will be sold at the door.

Next week not only do we celebrate our Thanksgiving luncheon, but we will be honoring our Veterans with our annual 2nd grade chorus concert and “Wall of Heroes” and we will be celebrating “Stand Up 2 Bullying Week”. Flyers regarding the Stand Up 2 Bullying Week were sent home last week. Themes planned for each day are:

  • Monday, “HONOR OUR HEROS” – Wear your Read, White and Blue
  • Tuesday, “EVERYONE COUNTS”– Wear a jersey or team shirt with a number on it
  • Wednesday, ‘PUT BULLYING TO REST” – Wear school appropriate pajamas
  • Thursday, “PAIR UP AGAINST BULLYING” – Dress alike day
  • Friday “PINK OUT” – Wear your “Be A Hero” or “Stand-Up 2 Bullying” t-shirt or something pink

We know our students will show their spirit and support by participating in the theme for each day!

As always, we thank you for your great support throughout the year, and we look forward to seeing you tonight at the PTA Spirit Ball and at the Thanksgiving lunch next Thursday!

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Dave Gerstner, Assistant Principal

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, non-punitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education. Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.
