Make Smart Choices on Social Media

Here's a quick tip: If you're wondering whether or not a particular message, photo, or video would be appropriate to put on social media, ask yourself this first: "Would I mind if my supervisor, my significant other, or a member of the media saw this?" If the answer is "Yes," please don't post it! View FCPS Social Media Guidance for Staff for additional suggestions on making smart choices in social media, including these Stop and Go examples

#OurFCPS Faces: Amy Lee

Amy Lee, Systems of Support Advisor, Lee HS (right) and a student

Amy Lee (above, right) is a Systems of Support Advisor (SOSA) at Lee HS. This is her seventh year at FCPS and her 14th year in education. As a SOSA, Amy works with students who are struggling with behavior, attendance, and academics. She is also part of Lee's Attendance Intervention Team and co-leads their Check and Connect Mentor Program. She says, "I serve as a case manager for students involved in the discipline process, and put in supports and interventions to help these students find success in our building. I also work with our students around on-time graduation and drop-out prevention, and often help them to explore alternative options that may better support their needs.”

Amy’s favorite quote is from Denis Waitley: "There are two primary choices in life—to accept conditions as they exist or accept the responsibility for changing them.” This aligns with Amy's favorite aspect of her work, which is seeing struggling students overcome challenges and make progress toward improving their lives. Principal Deirdre Lavery adds, “Amy has the uncanny ability to hold students accountable for their behavior while simultaneously walking with them each step of the way, so they learn from their mistakes. She collaborates with students to develop self-improvement plans and consistently follows up with the students to check their progress. [...] Students and staff trust Amy. She has earned that trust through her consistent, caring nature.”

ESOL teacher Yasemin Ciftci is also a big fan. "Amy Lee is a wonderful mentor to students who are struggling socially, emotionally, and academically. She is also a lifesaver for teachers, who as the last resort, reach out to her for help when some students choose to be relentlessly disruptive in the classroom. [...] She is an invaluable asset to Lee High School."

During her free time, Amy enjoys traveling, being with family, and attending sporting events and concerts. Thanks, Amy, for being a super, outstanding, supportive, and amazing SOSA!

Veterans Day Is on November 12

Veterans Day will occur on Monday, November 12. On that day or on the preceding Friday (November 9), students will engage in a variety of instructional activities to honor veterans and recognize the role of the military in American democracy. Many schools will also invite veterans and other citizens to share with students their perspectives on the responsibilities of citizenship and other patriotic themes.

November Is Diabetes Awareness Month

Did you know that more than 29 million people have diabetes in the United States? And, 86 million are at risk for developing it. The purpose of American Diabetes Month is to raise awareness and help educate the public about this dangerous disease. Diabetes is continually one of the top 10 leading causes of death in our country and contributes to over 250,000 deaths a year.

Learn ways to prevent or control the onset of diabetes with FCPS' Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Tip sheets, podcasts, resource guides, and recipes are available, too. Register with web ID: FCPS. You can also receive free health coaching by phone at 1-855-355-9097.
