Hornet Highlights - Week of October 31, 2018

.

Welcome to another edition of the Hornet Highlights. Here’s a look at what has been happening in classes, in competition, and in the lives of our students and staff over the last week. We hope reading this makes you feel connected to and informed about the work that we’re doing at Herndon High School. Thanks for reading.

 Sincerely, Liz Noto

Congratulations to our Field Hockey team for an outstanding season! These girls defeated Patriot High School 2-0 in the Region 6D tournament. While they were unable to defeat the Chantilly Chargers this past Friday, they have played exceptionally well this season. Way to go, Ladies!

.

Another little Hornet has made his way into the world. Welcome to Aaron Bear Lubinsky, son of Social Studies teacher David Lubinsky. Aaron couldn’t wait to experience Hornet life, so he made his debut about a week earlier than expected. We can’t blame him – Herndon is a great place to be. He and mom are doing great. Welcome, Baby Aaron!

Mr. Carag recently took a fieldtrip with his students to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum. It’s part of his master plan to involve students in more opportunities to see real life connections to school. Students spent the day exploring the exhibits and made it back in time for last period. Thank you, Mr. Carag, for thinking of out-of-the box opportunities to engage our students!

.

Thank you to our Hype Squad for their unending school spirit. The group posed here during our Pink Out game against Yorktown. Our season has picked up some serious momentum. After defeating Washington-Lee and McLean in consecutive weeks and Langley this past week, we host South Lakes in a Black Out game on Friday night. We hope to see you there! Go Hornets!

The Pride of Herndon Marching Band has done it again. Their annual “Showcase of Bands” competition went off without a hitch. Marching bands from all over the state traveled to Herndon to compete in the tournament. Special guests included Supervisor Foust, School Board Vice-Chair Ilryong Moon, School Board Member Janie Strauss, and Educational Music Specialist Katrina Chaney. Congratulations to the band, under the direction of Mrs. Kathleen Jacoby, for a job well done!

.

These Latin 2 students completely amazed me last week! Given a project to design a city using several required elements, this group got together to create a 3-dimensional model of their city in Minecraft. The program shows fly-over views and incredible detail – all from their imagination. Kudos to Mrs. Abelseth for coming up with such an engaging project. Other interesting outcomes of this project were tour videos of cities created using the green screen in the library.

.

The weather held out just long enough to squeeze in the Class of 2019’s Senior Panoramic Photo. Students wore their new senior shirts and braved the chilly weather for this event. It’s all part of a long list of seniors-only activities for their final year of school! We can’t wait to see this photo in the yearbook in the spring!

.

Welcome to the newest members of the National English Honor Society. Past and new members met in the library recently for their annual induction ceremony. New officers were elected, certificates were presented, and students were invited to a reception to celebrate. A special thank you to our very own Mr. Gillespie (Assistant Principal) for sharing a few words about his experience with the group.

.

Sometimes you just have to follow your nose to see what great things are happening around school. The Fitness and Foods room was buzzing on Taco Day recently. Students worked in teams to create these delicious treats and then shared their meal family-style. There wasn’t a crumb left over. Groups were required to make one type of taco using only vegetarian ingredients, which really stretched their abilities. We were thoroughly impressed by their work!

.

The Herndon Staff recently completed our first rebranded training of the “We Are Herndon” belief system. Still a “Kids at Hope” School, some of the previous training felt rooted in elementary development and language. With our realigned focus on who we are at Herndon High School, we still believe All Hornets are capable of success. No exceptions! And now we can focus on what this looks like for our 9th through 12th grade students. Thanks to the “We Are Herndon” committee for a great training.

I found this group in a far-away corner recently. This flute sectional was working to perfect their skills in the assigned song, Armed Forces – The Pride of America! Sectionals could be found all over the school on this particular day. When space is limited, our performing arts staff shows some serious creativity! Thanks to our flute players for posing for this photo between measures – they sounded amazing!
