One-Time Bonus for FY 2019

As part of the FY 2018 Final Budget Review this past July, the School Board approved a one percent, one-time bonus to grandfathered classroom instructional support scale employees and teacher scale employees who are not receiving at least a one percent salary increase in FY 2019. The one-time bonus will be paid to eligible monthly paid employees on November 30.

Campaigning at Work Doesn't Work

Did you know that FCPS staff should not wear campaign buttons, T-shirts, hats, or other items promoting political candidates during work hours? Those items shouldn't be displayed in workplaces either. See FCPS' policies regarding employee participation in political campaigns

Video of the Week

Stratford Landing ES Principal Maureen Marshall dressed as a dinosaur during morning Kiss-n-Ride.

Stratford Landing ES students and parents were very surprised to be greeted by a happy T-Rex at Kiss and Ride last Friday! Finding out that the school's principal, Maureen Marshall, was inside the prehistoric carnivore's costume certainly added to the fun! Maureen tweeted, "Amazing how many smiles it brought to kids AND parents on a Friday morning." Check out the video, which was tweeted by Physical Education Teacher Dave Magee.

#OurFCPS Faces: Emily Burrell

Emily Burrell, math teacher, South Lakes HS

Emily Burrell has been teaching math for over 17 years. This is her seventh year at FCPS. She spent two years at Fairfax HS and is in her fifth year at South Lakes HS. Emily says, “As a math teacher, I love watching students figure things out and have lightbulb moments. I love listening to their discourse and hearing different approaches to understanding.”

Teaching math is just one of Emily’s roles. She is also a news liaison and co-lead mentor teacher. “As a news liaison,” says Emily, “I collect stories from students, teachers, administrators, and staff members, and send them to Mary Shaw [in the Office of Communication and Community Relations (OCCR)].” Emily adds, “I love my work as a news liaison, because all of the good news of the school arrives at my inbox. It is so inspiring.” Mary, a communication specialist, sings Emily’s praises. “Emily is a natural news liaison. She pulls together appealing, easy-to-understand stories about what’s happening at her school. Accompanied by a variety of engaging photos, her submissions are among the best in FCPS and have appeared on FCPS’ website and social media.”

Emily says, “As a news liaison and as a co-lead mentor, I enjoy an increased sense of community at school. I work with a truly amazing staff at South Lakes.”

Outside of FCPS, Emily is currently training for a marathon. “I ran one 15 years ago, before I was a working mother. It’s been tough to build up the miles again and equally difficult to find the time. But, I apply the same growth mindset that I use in the classroom to my running and appreciate every time I’m able to increase my long run.”

Emily, FCPS is inspired by all of the great work you’re doing for our students!
