This week our students focused on the trait of CREATIVITY. Creative people can look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences, and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They generate lots of different ideas and can pursue them with energy and enthusiasm.
CREATIVITY is a process that takes courage and we look forward to seeing the courageous ways our Powell pumas show their creativity.
Starting Monday, we will begin learning about BRAVERY. BRAVERY refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgment; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness, but instead the overcoming of fear.
Bravery can take many forms. Physical bravery involves overcoming the fear of bodily injury or death. Moral bravery occurs when an individual does what he/she believes is right in the face of social and/or financial consequences. Mental bravery occurs when people overcome their everyday fears and anxieties.

Fourteen Fairfax County public schools are among 59 schools in Virginia recognized as Purple Star schools, indicating they are military-friendly schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families. The recognition was announced by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children.
Purple Star schools include Clermont Elementary, Colin Powell Elementary, Flint Hill Elementary, Fort Belvoir Primary, Fort Belvoir Upper, Hayfield Secondary, Hunt Valley Elementary, Lane Elementary, Longfellow Middle, North Springfield Elementary, Rocky Run Middle, Sangster Elementary, Sunrise Valley Elementary, and Waynewood Elementary.
To qualify for a Purple Star, schools must have a trained staff member as a primary point of contact for military families and students who also serves as a liaison between the school and local military communities. Schools must also demonstrate their commitment to meeting the needs of military students by providing resources and programming on issues important to military families, such as transitions and academic planning.
Purple Star schools retain the designation for three years before being required to reapply..

This week we are highlighting three of our Powell ES specialists. All of our students have a learning opportunity with Mrs. Bach, Ms. Plumber or Ms. Warner. Students in Grades 3, 5 and 6 enjoy STEAM each week with Mrs. Bach, while students in Grades 4 and 5 explore and learn with Ms. Plummer in Digital Learning. Students in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade have the opportunity to learn Korean through STEAM content with Mrs. Warner.

Hi Everyone! My name is Mrs. Bach and I am the AAP Resource Teacher and the STEAM teacher at Powell! I am lucky enough to work with all of the students at Powell during our critical and creative thinking lessons. I also get the opportunity to work with 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades this year in STEAM classes. It is really enjoyable to help students think in different ways and to encourage fun and creativity in their learning.
My husband and I adore our two dogs Kora (an Italian Mastiff) and Walter (a Weimaraner). We both coach volleyball and I spend time doing photography and enjoying the great outdoors, especially during my favorite seasons of autumn and winter.

I am a native of Virginia, and grew up in the Haymarket and Manassas area of Prince William County. Before joining the Powell family ten years ago, I taught high school mathematics. In my role as the School-Based Technology Specialist (SBTS) I enjoy working with both the staff and students exploring how technology supports student learning. This year I work with 4th and 5th grade students once a week for Digital Learning classes. It is always a joy to watch the students express their creativity during our time together in the computer lab. In my time away from school I enjoy baking, spending time with my large extended family and helping them plan our celebrations & gatherings. |

My name is Jade Warner and I am the Korean FLES/LTC STEM teacher for Kindergarten through 2nd grade. Learning a world language at an earlier age can greatly impact a young mind's development in so many ways while also helping students grow into a global citizens. I'm honored to have been challenged with introducing students to the world of languages with the goal of helping them to achieve international communication skills success in their future.
I am a mother and I have four amazing children, ages ranging from 30 to 12 years old, a restless puppy and a sassy cat. Being a prior military family, we moved from post to post around the world for almost 20 years before we finally settled down in Burke, Virginia in 2012. As a former military spouse for 20 years, I developed a love for learning new things, travelling to new places and trying new cuisines!
I look forward to welcoming you all into my classroom in the near future and taking the academic highway to new culture adventures in learning.

provides online access to view your child’s student information, including

In August and September parents of students new to FCPS and
parents of select Kindergarten students, those without a currently active SIS

SIS Parent Account. You must create your account before the activation code
expires which is typically 45 days from the date the letter was mailed. If the
