A message from Dr. Floyd
Hello Woodson Families!
Last week we celebrated almost 500 10th – 12th graders who earned an Academic letter for achieving a 4.0 last school year here at WTW. Thank you to all the families who were able to attend to celebrate this honor with their children. We know it is not always easy to take time away from work.
I want to be sure everyone is aware that funding for FCPSOn (one computer per student) was approved for budget consideration for next school year in all high schools. Our teachers are working this year to prepare for this initiative, building lessons with Blended Learning, discovering more about Google and incorporating Virtual Reality into classroom lessons. It will be a learning curve for everyone next year but we encourage families to have discussions now about screen time, plans to charge laptops every night and proper care for these devices. Much more information will be coming this Spring, so stay tuned!
Our PTSO continues to support our teachers and students. Their contributions in hours of volunteering, donations of cookies and financial assistance in classrooms are critical to our success with your sons and daughters. Please consider becoming a member. There is a new, easy online method to do this: https://squareup.com/store/wtwptso. All the money the PTSO brings in goes right back to our classrooms. I encourage all parents to join and to even come to a meeting and see how you can support WTW. The next meeting is Tuesday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the library. GET INVOLVED! We need each of you as part of our school!
To all our families who live on the streets surrounding our school: we have heard your concerns. Traffic enforcement will begin in the next few weeks. If you are a driver, be aware that traffic enforcement will begin in the next few weeks in the neighborhoods around Woodson. Please follow all traffic signs and laws to keep all our students safe.
As quarter one comes to an end, we celebrate successes in our classrooms, through our intervention program, on the stage and on the field. I hope to see you soon at one of the many events planned at WTW.
Best,
Dr. Floyd

 Fall Production: Salvation Road
The Woodson Drama Department is excited to announce our Fall production of Salvation Road by D.W. Gregory. Ms. Gregory also wrote Radium Girls which was performed by Woodson Drama a few years ago.
The Cast and Crew have been working so hard to bring this story to life! You won't want to miss this thoughtful, challenging, and funny play! Click here to watch the YouTube trailer for the show.
Performance dates are:
Friday November 2 at 7:30 p.m.;
*Saturday November 3 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.;
Friday November 9 at 7:30 p.m.;
Saturday November 10 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
*Of special note, on Saturday November 3rd at 2:00 p.m., D.W. Gregory and former cult members will be having a "talk back" where the audience will be able to engage with the playwright, cast, and former cult members.
"Salvation Road is inspired by a personal story and looks at the cult experience from the flip side: the point of view of bewildered family and friends left behind. Where do you draw the line between faith and fanaticism? Between a church and cult? Perhaps it is that moment when you are forced to choose."
For more information and to purchase tickets, please go to the Woodson Drama Boosters webpage.
End of First Quarter
Today is the last day of the first quarter.
Report cards will be distributed through 7th period classes on Friday, November 16th. Students who do not have a 7th period class may pick up their report cards in Student Services starting on Friday, November 16th.
FCPS Weekly Progress Reports will not be sent to parents Wednesday, October 31st through Friday, November 9th during first quarter grading and report card generation. Additionally, the Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Friday, November 2nd, at 4:00 p.m. through Saturday, November 10th, at 6:00 a.m.
 Cellist Visits Orchestra Students
Orchestra students experienced a rare sound today - that of a cello made in the 18th century. More phenomenal is that the renowned cellist, Amit Peled, was playing.
Peled is the guest artist this Saturday, November 3rd, with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and he will be performing on the historic 1733 Gofriller Pablo Casals cello he brought with him today. Peled not only played for the students but offered a master class, answering questions about musicianship, his life, and his learning. After playing Bach’s Cello Suite, Sarabande, he said, ”It is possible Bach heard this cello played.”
FAFSA Line-by-Line Info Session
On Wednesday, November 7th at 7:00 p.m. in Cavalier Hall, Woodson is hosting a line-by-line information session for parents on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. This is the form used to apply for financial aid for college or graduate school.

 Dr. Alfonso Alonso spoke with the AP biology and AP environmental science classes about his research on monarch butterflies and their migration. He works for the Smithsonian Institute’s center for Conservation and Sustainability.
National Career Development Month
Career research in high school can help students discover what they enjoy giving direction for potential post-secondary training.
Career research is college research because planned careers suggest majors that might support chosen careers. Students can then seek colleges with those majors and/or post-secondary training that supports chosen careers.
Spend some time this month doing focused career research. See what you can discover!
Visit the Career Center Newsletter found on the Woodson website.
