Glasgow Community Gazette - October 28

Glasgow Community:

It looks like the sun has finally broken through on this Sunday afternoon. With the cancellation of my daughters’ softball games this weekend, we spent most of Saturday and this morning cleaning and organizing our house. I am looking forward to being outside today to enjoy the weather.

This past week was quite remarkable at Glasgow Middle School. On Monday, members of the FCPS Academic Learning Group, which includes top instructional leaders from the school division, visited classrooms to observe the quality classroom instruction that is happening in the building.

On Friday, Virginia State Superintendent Dr. James Lane, Del. Kaye Kory, School Board Member Sandy Evans, Chief Equity Officer Dr. Francisco Duran, and Region 2 Executive Principal Penny Gros visited Glasgow. They toured classrooms and visited with students on our 7th and 8th Grade Interdisciplinary Teams. Check out my Twitter account to view photos from this week’s events.

We had the opportunity to debrief with both groups and share out our observations. Our visitors shared the following: * High level tasks across all classroom settings. * Positive, caring classroom culture to support high-level thinking for all students. * Powerful teaming: teachers working together to differentiate instruction for students. * Clear evidence of common planning, including aligned targets that are differentiated to meet students’ needs. * High levels of engagement, including elements of choice and student voice.

Finally, this week marks the end of the 1st quarter. Grade card will be distributed the week of November 12. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Glasgow Goodies

Panthers of the Month - The IB Learner Profile that we focused on this month for our Panther of the Month was inquiry.  Students who demonstrate inquiry show independence in their learning, are naturally curious, and love learning. Our Panthers of the Month, Sameer Ahmed, Gabriela Flores Gonzalez, Alex Birt, Samanta Perez Pena, Haytam Tahri, and Keilin Gutierrez Calix were chosen for being curious about science and the world around them, always asking questions and making sure they understand content, making connections and building on the content in class, wanting to know more and understand things better, being engaged in everything that they learn, and being willing to try new things! Congratulations to all of our winners and nominees!

October - National Bullying Prevention Month - October is National Bullying Prevention Month and the Student Services Department will continue our Anti-Bullying Lessons through our Panther Time classes. The lesson will teach students what bullying looks like, tips on how to handle it in a variety of situations, and cyber bullying. Our goal is to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the impact of bullying on students.

October 31 - Halloween Costumes - On October 31st is Halloween. In the true spirit of Halloween we are allowing students to dress in costume. However, costumes must follow the school dress code: 1) No masks or face paint. Hats are permitted only if they are part of the costume and they do not obstruct view of the face. 2) Students who participate must come to school with costumes on. We will not allow students to change into costumes once in the building. Nor will we allow students to apply face make-up or hair coloring at school. 3) No props are allowed 4) Most importantly let’s make sure that our costumes reflect our panther principles of kindness, commitment, and safety.

Finally, recognize that students should not bring candy to school. We have a number of students who have food allergies and bringing candy to school can put other students at risk.

Volunteer Opportunities

Open Campus Donations Needed - Open Campus is right around the corner and as we have started planning, we have noticed we are in need of a few items people may have around their homes! If you or your family has any lightly used nail polish that you are willing to donate, we would love to add it to our collection.  We are also in need of gently used pots! If you have any old pots that you’d be willing to donate, we could use a few extra. Email Lauren Oliver at lroliver@fcps.edu if you have any questions or wish to donate.
