Field Day

Literacy News

As we finish up the first quarter this week, all grade levels will be moving into reading Nonfiction.  Kindergarten will be reading nonfiction closer to the end of 2nd quarter and grades 1-6 will be starting 2nd quarter with a nonfiction unit.  The learning goals in nonfiction are based around having students learn new information while developing ideas through discussion.  Students will also learn to look at multiple sources to gain an understanding of a topic.  Our nonfiction units are a progression of learning from first to sixth grade.  In first and second grades, students learn to look at all kinds of nonfiction and really understand that it is a genre that helps us to learn new information.  They are also reading the text features such as bold words, captions, headings, etc.  In third grade, students look at nonfiction, specifically the functional formats such as recipes, how to/directional pieces, advertisements, flyers, etc.  Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders start to explore narrative nonfiction, which is a type of informational text told as a story.  Biographies and a day in the life of an animal are good examples of narrative nonfiction.  Nonfiction units are a great way to integrate what we are learning in science and social studies.  At home, try to find a nonfiction book to share with your child and enjoy learning something new!
