STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID

**GOING HOME ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 22ND WITH ALL IRVING STUDENTS- please return by Friday, October 26th.**

Beginning on October 16th, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Learn more by watching this short video featuring Superintendent Scott Brabrand and the U.S. Army Garrison Commander COL Michael Greenberg from Fort Belvoir.

Watch this short animated video for a summary of this endeavor.

Boxtops for Education

Start saving those Box Tops for Education!  They really add up and are an easy fundraiser.  There is a collection box in the main office.  Please send them in with your student in ziploc bags of 50 boxtops each.  Also, please make sure the boxtops have not expired.  The WIMS PTA has already collected quite a few and is getting ready for the November 2nd submission deadline.

Red Ribbon Week

All FCPS schools participate in the National Red Ribbon Week sponsored by National Family Partnership.  Since 1985, the symbol of the Red Ribbon has been used as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.  For more information about National Family Partnership and Red Ribbon Week, please click here.

At Irving, we will be having a spirit week to raise awareness for drug prevention during the week of October 22nd through October 26th.  Students are encouraged to dress up for the theme each day.  The themes for each day are:

Friday October 26th: Meme Day “Drugs aren’t funny, memes are.” – Students are encouraged to dress up like their favorite school-appropriate meme.

Library News

PARENT  READERS  NEEDED!  If you are an Irving MS parent who likes to read, please email librarian Mary Ann Monk for a possible volunteer opportunity (mamonk1@fcps.edu)

8th Grade students should have finished up their first-quarter English book project on Friday of this week.  Now that their projects are in, we want those library books returned.  English teachers will be reminding students to return them.  Overdue notices and texts will be sent out next week to those students who still need to return books!

All 7th Grade students have visited the library this week to borrow a fiction book for their upcoming English assignment.  Please ask your 7th grader what title they chose and why.  It might get them off to a good start if you were to read aloud with the the first chapter or two of their book.  [I have done this with my own sons, taking turns reading pages until we reach a cliff-hanger or interesting stopping point!--Ms. Monk

Students are eligible for the FCPS network password recovery service available at: https://itweb.fcps.edu/accountrecovery/index.cfm  As the end of the school year approaches, teachers will be encouraging students to register for this service, which might save considerable time should their network password be forgotten over the summer.  Any information used for a recovery option will remain private.  Students may register for this service by either accessing the link above or by following the directions below:
