2018-2019 CES Family Bulletin #9

weekly Photos

Dear CES,

This year we are focusing on the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skill of collaboration with our students. At CES we define a collaborator as a student that:

  • Respects divergent thinking to engage others in thoughtful discussion.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work interdependently within a group to promote learning, increase productivity, and achieve common goals.
  • Analyzes and constructs arguments and positions to ensure examination of a full range of viewpoints.
  • Seeks and uses feedback from others to adapt ideas and persist in accomplishing difficult tasks.

Please take some time to talk with your child about their collaboration efforts at school. Instead of asking "What did you do in school today?', try asking one of the questions below:

  • How were you a collaborator today?
  • How did you help your team finish the [activity, project, assignment]?
  • Were there moments when your team struggled? How did you handle that?
  • Did you have a chance to see things from a different side? What did you learn when you did that?

CES Fall Food Drive

  • Centreville Elementary will be collecting non-perishable canned and/or boxed food (cereal, snacks, pasta, pasta sauce, canned vegetables, etc. in sealed containers) from October 29th – November 9th.
    • Donations may be dropped off in the storage containers in the front lobby.
  • All food will be donated to the Katherine Hanley Shelter. Families in this shelter are in transition and many have school aged children. The shelter provides employment coaching, financial and literacy training, after school tutoring, and support groups and parenting classes.

Centreville Honors Our Veterans

On Monday, November 12th, the federal observance of Veterans Day, Centreville Elementary School would like to honor veterans with a special event at our school.  We will have a luncheon prepared in your honor that you will be able to enjoy with your student(s) at CES.  Any relatives of our CES students who are veterans are welcome to join us in our event.

We also would like to invite you to read to students in classrooms around our building.  This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about how you have served and to show their appreciation for your service.  If interested, veterans may choose between two time slots to be a guest reader in several classrooms around the school.  Choice 1 will be 10:30am-12pm reading in classrooms and Choice 2 will be 1:00pm – 2:30pm reading in classrooms.  Lunch for all guest readers and their children will be held in the library from 12:00pm-1:00pm.

Thank you so much for your service.  We hope many veterans will be able to attend this special event at CES.  If you are interested, please sign up using this form.

This past week our students focused on Perspective!

WHAT DOES PERSPECTIVE MEAN

You appreciate when people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.

Perspective is also referred to as wisdom and is distinct from intelligence. People with this strength are sought out for advice because they see the big picture and can make sense of the world’s complexity. This strength of perspective gives individuals the ability to see to the heart of difficult matters and achieve clarity. Most importantly, they are honest and behave in an ethically consistent manner.

Perspective is usually gained over time, as one accumulates more knowledge and experiences. However, developing perspective is not only a matter of time. It comes from truly listening to others when they talk and working to understand new points of view when reading books, listening to stories, or watching movies.
