PTO News Wednesday, October 24
The following message is sent on behalf of the Cooper Middle School PTO.
Its content reflect the views of the PTO.
Candygram Sales
You still have time to order Candygrams!
Make sure you get your order in by Friday October 26. Historically, students have really loved the tradition of receiving this special grab bag full of candy from their families and friends.
In addition to receiving special messages from their loved ones, they can send them to each other too … students can place those orders during their lunch periods on Thursday and Friday, October 25 and 26.
PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee that the CHOCOLATE Candygrams will be nut free. If your child has nut allergies, please consider ordering the FRUITY Candygram.
To Purchase: Click here to download Candygram Cards. Or go to our web site: www.cooperpto.org
Candygrams will be distributed to the students on Oct. 31st.

Speaker John Halligan
John Halligan will be our featured speaker this Monday, October 29.
The Cooper PTO has teamed with the Longfellow Middle School PTA to bring you this dynamic speaker with a powerful presentation about bullying, teen depression, social media, and suicide. We hope you’ll take advantage of this amazing opportunity to hear him.
Please be aware the content of Mr. Halligan’s speech can be disturbing, as it begins with the story of his own son’s suicide.
WHEN: Monday, October 29, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: Longfellow Middle School Lecture Hall (2000 Westmoreland St., Falls Church, VA 22043)
Parking Information: Please park in the school lot or by the basketball court.
WHO: John Halligan www.RyansStory.com
Please Note: All Cooper students will have seen Mr. Halligan’s presentation that morning, unless they have chosen to opt out of the event. Seeing a similar presentation yourself might give you a chance to start important conversations with your middle school child.
Hearing and Vision Screening
We still need volunteers for tomorrow (Thursday, October 25). Every seventh grader and new incoming eighth grader needs to be screened for potential issues in hearing and vision, but to get that many students screened efficiently, the school public health nurse needs extra assistance. If you’ve got a spare hour, we could use your help.

Parent/Principal Coffee
Thanks so much to Ritika Fedewa for hosting such a lovely morning, and to Brenda Beeland and Lauren Carbaugh for organizing. We had a productive conversation with Ms. Randall about bathroom passes and the upcoming renovation, and we appreciate all who came.
Service Learning Hours Opportunity
On Saturday, October 27th, CMS band students will be at four different locations asking for donations to fund the CMS Symphonic Band trip to the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis.
Students participating can get 2 hours of service credit.

Langley High School Orchestra
The first concert of the year, "Spookfest," will be at 7pm on Tuesday, October 30th and will feature "spooky" music compositions.
Orchestra students are encouraged to play in costumes (or wear orchestra spirit wear). Children attending the concert are welcome to wear costumes too! The concert is free to the public and there will be hospitality items available before it starts.
Spelling Bee
Cooper Middle School’s Sixth Annual Spelling Bee is coming soon! Classroom bees will be held in English classes between November 5 and November 21; the top two students in each class will advance to the school-wide bee on the morning of November 30. Parents of students participating in the school-wide bee will be notified and are welcome to attend the bee and support their students.
The Cooper Middle School Champion will go on to the Fairfax County Bee on March 17, 2019 and the winner of that event goes on to the Scripps National Bee next May.
The list of study words for 7th/8th grades will be posted soon on Blackboard by English teachers for students who wish to prepare. Note that these are suggested study lists, not all-inclusive lists. Words for the classroom and school-wide bees will be drawn from these study guides and also from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Additional study resources include the website myspellit.com and the 2019 My Spell It! PDF, which will also be posted on Blackboard.
