Homework and the Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, we do want to remind families that we have “homework free breaks” during major FCPS student holidays. To this end, teachers are asked to not assign homework over Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break and not have any projects due or give assessments on the first two block days afterward. Everyone has worked hard and needs some time to relax and rejuvenate.
PSAT and PSAT 8/9 Accounts
Scores for the 2018 PSAT/NMSQT will be available in December. Students will be able to view scores via College Board’s website at https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/home. Students who do not currently have a College Board online account will need to create one to view scores.
Acknowledge, Care, and Tell - 9th Graders
Information has been sent home to parents of 9th graders regarding our upcoming Acknowledge, Care & Tell program. It will take place November 7-14 through HPE 9 classes. The program goals are to help your teenager recognize the signs of depression and understand that depression is a treatable illness, to impress upon teens that they can help themselves or a friend by talking to an adult about their concerns and to explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression. Students will watch a 25-minute video called “Friends for Life” followed by a discussion facilitated by an MHS counseling or clinical staff member. After the discussion, students will complete a brief adolescent depression screening tool. If you need a copy of the descriptive letter and/or the opt-out form, please see the announcements section on the MHS website.

Fairfax County Youth Survey - 2018 - 10th and 12th graders
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County School Board are working in collaboration to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The purpose of the survey is to collect data from sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade students regarding their level of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. It is also to measure specific risk and protective factors including health, health risks, substance use, eating disorders, obesity, and for eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade students only, sexual behavior. The results of this survey will be extremely helpful in determining the extent to which youth engage in behaviors that pose a risk to their current and future health. It will also assist our community in developing appropriate education, prevention, and intervention programs.
The 2018 Fairfax County Youth Survey is to be administered between November 7-16, 2018, to all sixth-grade students in all elementary schools, to sixth-grade students in selected middle schools, all eighth grade students in social studies classes, and tenth and twelfth-grade students in English classes. The survey is designed to allow participants to complete the survey in one class period. Parents and/or guardians can view the survey at the link provided. Parents and/or Guardians choosing to opt-out their student(s), should complete the form at the link provided. If you have a completed opt-out form, please return to Sue Tabish in the main office.
