Digital Citizenship Week (K-6th Grades)
Colvin Run celebrated Digital Citizenship week Oct. 16-20th. We reminded students that though we focus on how to responsible, respectful users of digital technology on this week, it should happen every day! Students saw a short video on the morning news show about different aspects of digital citizenship each day, and did hands-on activities in both the STEAM lab and computer lab times during the day to reinforce the ideas.
This link provides resources for families to help raise students to be safe, responsible, and ethical in the digital world.
Here is a great article from Common Sense Media for parents of upper grade parents, in particular.

Book Character Day Nov. 14th- Dress up/Costumes (K-6th Grades)
Students are not to wear costumes to school on Halloween, Oct. 31st. If your family celebrates Halloween, as long as there is a book to match the costume, students are permitted to wear the costume to school on November 14th to participate in Book Character Day.
On Wednesday, November 14th, your child will have the opportunity to wear a costume or come to school dressed up as their FAVORITE BOOK CHARACTER to celebrate our Library Book Fair, which takes place the week of November 12-16.
Impact Aid Forms (K-6th Grades)
Impact Aid Forms will be sent home in folders on Wednesday, November 1. Forms should be returned to school by Friday, November 3. It is very important that this form is completed and returned to school as soon as possible. One form is required for each student, not per family. Each November, FCPS sends out a Student-Parent Survey to identify students with federal connections to ascertain much needed federal funds via Impact Aid grants. For the vast majority of families, the form will require only a signature and date.
If someone in the household is a civilian working on federal property, active duty, or foreign military, please complete the relevant information in sections 2, 3, 4 and 5. We really appreciate your assistance with this quick turnaround.
Veterans' Day Celebration-Save The Date Nov. 8th (K-6th Grades)
On Thursday, November 8th, we will highlight our United States veterans and active military with a school-wide Veteran’s Day Celebration. Leading up to the event, we will be creating a Veterans’ Hall of Fame on which our CRES families can honor/ remember our school community’s veterans and active military. Families should complete an information sheet and bring it in with a picture of the veteran. Students will post the picture and information sheet on a school-supplied ‘ready-made’ poster (see picture right) and hang the poster in the Main Lobby. Students may bring in a picture and information sheet to add to a ready-made poster in the Front Office starting Friday, October 26th.
All Hall of Fame posters must be submitted by Wednesday, November 7th.
We would be honored to have our school community’s veterans/active military in attendance at the ceremony and to stay after the ceremony to meet with students. We understand that they may be unavailable to attend our ceremony, and we would still like to honor/remember them in our Veterans’ Hall of Fame.
Please click the link below to see the schedule of events for the morning of November 8th. All veterans/active military who would like to be part of the ceremony must RSVP here by Friday, November 2nd.
Keep Yourself Safe on the Internet – Save the Date Nov. 14th (Presentation 5th & 6th Grade students; Parent Night-Open to all parents)
We are excited to announce a special presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 14th at 7:00 PM. At this PARENTS ONLY event, Chad Brockway will speak about “Keeping our Children Safe on the Internet.” This event is open to ALL CRES Parents. His presentation was well received by parents, students, and staff the past four years. Learn to monitor your child’s devices to ensure their anonymity and prevent cyberbullying. Parents who attended last year said it was very helpful. This is a ‘not to be missed’ event for parents whose children use the internet or will soon gain access to the internet. Thank you to the CRES PTO for funding this special presentation.
Mr. Brockway will meet with the 5th and 6th grade students Thursday, Nov. 15th at 2:30 p.m. to share a very child-friendly session highlighting the importance of making wise decisions and being safe when online. Your child will bring home an Opt-out Information sheet in today's Wednesday folder. Please sign and return if you would NOT like your 5th/6th grade child to attend his session. Opt-out forms are due back by Nov. 9th.
Our guest speaker, Chad Brockway will share information on how your kids are using technology, and how technology can be used against your kids. Chad comes from an extensive background in Intelligence, counterintelligence, counter-terrorism and federal law enforcement. All of which has been primarily focused on emerging technology and cyber operations.

The Library Book Fair-SAVE THE DATE- Nov. 12th-16th (K-6th Grades)
her class’ two book fair sessions. However, if you are unable to visit the book fair yourself, your child will browse (with adult help) and make a Wish List early in the week, and bring that list home to discuss with you. They will be able to bring money on their class’ second allocated time slot to purchase any books that you have approved. You can view the class schedule here.
Please take time to look through the teacher wish lists, a wonderful way to supplement your child’s learning in the classroom. The book fair is always open to adults, so you can also bring the child’s wish list in yourself and purchase the items you choose from the list.
Book Fair hours are as follows: Monday 10:00 – 3:45; Tuesday 9:30 – 3:45; Wednesday 9:30 – 6:45; Thursday 9:30 – 3:45; Friday 9:30 – 3:45. ****Students accompanied by their parents may shop at the Book Fair from 8:00 until 9:15 am on Tuesday and Thursday****
WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS: We would love to have volunteers help to work at the Library Book Fair. (Setting up, taking money, helping little ones with wish lists, packing the fair up!) Please use this link to sign up for a time that you would like to come in and help out.
All proceeds benefit the Colvin Run Elementary School Library.

CRES attends Governor Proclamation Event
A group of CRES students were special guests at the Virginia Governor’s Proclamation Event, at the Capitol Building in Richmond, highlighting the 400th anniversary of the important Virginia events of 1619. This Proclamation event was among the first in a series of “American Evolution” events throughout Virginia open to the public. Click to view pictures.
Kindergarten Corner: Riverbend Field Trip (Kindergarten)
Kindergarteners enjoyed taking their first field trip of the school year to Riverbend Park earlier this month. Students received opportunities to role play the different jobs (king, queen, worker, soldier) ants have in a colony. They also went on a nature walk to search for ants and ant colonies, as well as spiders, worms, centipedes, and other critters found out in the woods. Lastly, students were given the opportunity to dig in the dirt and under leaves to see what they could find. It was a great experience and a wonderful kindergarten memory was made for all!
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Update (3rd Grade)
Thank you for making our third grade service learning project such a massive success! You helped us raise $1,890.02! That’s the most money we have EVER raised in one week! All of the money will go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation to help find a cure for childhood cancer. Click here for pictures.
Journey North Tulip Planting (4th Grade)
On Monday, October 22nd, fourth grade STEAM Lab students planted 70 tulips as part of the Journey North Tulip bulb Project. This fall, people across the northern hemisphere will plant Red Emperor tulip bulbs in Journey North Test Gardens to monitor seasonal change in a scientific way. Next spring, when plants emerge and bloom, students will report their observations and data. One garden at a time, the relationship between climate, geography, and the arrival of spring is revealed. Over the long term, scientist can help monitor global warming effects on plant growth as well. We are excited to take part in this Citizen Science project for the fourth year in a row. Keep your eyes out for emergence and blooming this spring! Click here for pictures.
Beautiful Butterflies Abound (K-6th Grades)
STEAM Lab students observed over 30 Monarch caterpillars emerge from eggs, grow and molt, enter chrysalis, then transform into butterflies throughout September and October. Click here for pictures.
CRES PTO Culturama – our own International Night
On the evening of Friday, November 9th, 2018, we hope to fill the cafeteria again with yummy foods, cultural artifacts, talented acts, and a colorful fashion show.
Culturama is an event that is open for the entire school community and not only open for those who participate. The event works when we have lots of participation, so we would love for all of our CRES community to be represented! Multiple families and scouting groups can also team up to represent a country, too!
Some ways you can be involved:
Displays - Display pictures, artifacts, activities, crafts, etc. to represent your country
Foods - Bring savory or sweet food dish for our international "tasting" menu
Fashion Show - Dress in traditional clothing to showcase in the fashion show
Talent - Perform a dance, song, talent, martial art, or acrobatic routine for our cultural talent show (be wowed by our diverse and talented CRES students!)
To SIGNUP to showcase a country, please fill the signup genius (8th-grade volunteers are welcome to help and earn their service hours by filling the signup genius). Questions? Contact Olivia Ranakusuma olivia.ranakusuma@gmail.com or 202-768-6454.
