Please join us at 4:15pm in the Hunters Woods Shopping center parking lot, near Safeway. - If it is raining, Elementary Schools will not join in with the parade which will go on rain or shine!

We will march together to South Lakes High School (2 miles - one way). Strollers and wagons are welcome.

All students MUST have a chaperone.

NEW ACTIVITY: This year SLHS has invited local elementary schools to participate in a new parade activity -- decorating red wagons (child-size wagon) as mini parade floats!

Please base your mini float decorations around this year's music-oriented, SLHS Homecoming theme--"Tune into South Lakes!" SLHS will award a new, traveling spirit stick to the elementary school that has the most spirited participation in the parade!

Wear DWES Spirit Wear so we can spot you!

IB LEARNER PROFILE OF THE MONTH:

Risk-Taker

Kindergarten students have been learning about community jobs and community workers.  Each student chose a preferred job found in the community to research and become an expert on. They created a report showing what the job entails and the types of tools they would need to do their job.  The students presented their jobs to other adults who came through the classroom as well as visiting older students. The children were incredibly articulate and able to answer many questions about the job, how it benefits the community and the reasons they chose the job they researched.

Last Chance - STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID.

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Why: Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

How: For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Digital Citizenship Week

Digcit

Shared Responsibility: Parents’ role in ensuring safe, responsible, and ethical technology use.

Our children are facing a future full of challenges. Empathy, ethics and a sense of civic responsibility are more important than ever! We can use media and technology to help our children build positive character traits. Digital tools, books, movies, information, and apps can help students gain another perspective, collaborate with others, and design solutions to meet the needs of today’s world. How can we help?

With Social Networking sites like Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter children are able to communicate and post personal information that includes:

  • Talking about their day-to-day activities
  • Maintaining friendships
  • Posting photos
  • Coordinating social events

However, one thing our children are doing online that adults are not, is going through adolescence. Today all of the angst and drama-filled, normal teenage experiences that they all go through plays out online via social media. Students may not think about or realize the long term implications of their choices, or how they are impacting others.

When something is posted publicly, everyone else is not only aware of it, but discussing it with others, which often leads to it spilling over into the classroom and disrupting learning.

As parents, keeping up with what our children are doing online is important, if time consuming. Personally, as a parent, I have set up several expectations for my daughters including not allowing them access to social media until they are 13 (the Facebook) recommended age, as one example). Also, I let them know that since I am paying for their device, it is technically mine, and at any time I can pick it up and be aware of what they are texting, etc.I have offered them a notebook/journal/diary they can write in if they would like to write private thoughts.

It is so important to be aware of how your children are spending their time, and what they are doing on their device so you can stay connected to what they are experiencing.
