Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

We invite you all to come join us on a world tour tomorrow as we travel the night across many countries all in less than two hours. We cannot wait to see what our volunteers will be showcasing for each of their countries.  Please join us with your family to enjoy the cultural diversity at Oak Hill.  In addition to informational tables, several Oak Hill students have signed up to perform and showcase their talents pertaining to their culture.

Rushing to get dinner? Don’t worry…the PTA has arranged food trucks! There will be variety of food available for purchase starting at 5:30pm. Come early so you have enough time to eat before you start your world tour.  Please remember this is a ticketed event. Entry fee is $5/family, or $2/person.  Thank you for the tremendous response so far! We'll see you all on Thursday for our Multi-Cultural Night from 6-8pm! Stay for the entire time or pop in and out, just come!

Thank you to the many volunteers that have been helping with class field trips, the lunchroom, PTA events, classrooms or the upcoming Field Day next week! Many hands make light work and we truly appreciate YOU!

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Then, please come to “Supporting Young Readers” presented by Cathy Lahr, an Oak Hill reading specialist, on November 12th following the Veterans Day celebration.  The session will run from 8:50-9:30 in the library. Chinese intro

First graders introducing themselves with puppets in Chinese class.

Chinese News

During the first month of the school year we focused on getting to know the students.  The 4th, 5th, & 6th grade classes gave self-introduction and oral presentations using Google Slides during class.  After they introduced themselves, their classmates asked questions about them.

The Kindergarten and 1st grade classes also learned how to introduce themselves.  They practiced saying their name and how they feel in Chinese.  The 1st grades made hand puppets and used them to introduce themselves.  The 2nd and 3rd graders practiced in pairs to ask each other their names and what seasons they like.  In October, 1st grade began learning the seasons and weather.  They used a board game to practice how to say the different seasons and they also drew trees in different seasons.

The 2nd graders began learning about change.  They will design a cooler that can keep popsicles from melting during hot weather.

The 3rd graders began learning about Ladybugs.  They will review what they have learned in science class and be able to say some of the terms in Chinese.  They will design a garden that can attract Ladybugs.

The 4th graders will learn about the Water cycle.  They will design a filter to make dirty water clean at the end of the unit.

The 5th graders will learn about earthquakes and continents.  They will learn where there have been earthquakes and the name of famous places in different continents in Chinese.  At the end of this unit they will use straws to make an earthquake proof building.

The 6th graders will learn about the solar system.  They will review what they've learned in science and know some basic knowledge in Chinese.  At the end of this unit they will design a lesson to teach the lower grades about the solar system in Chinese.
