Eagles in the News

Senior Angeline Ignacio will be representing Edison HS in the Virginia Honor Choir at the VMEA Conference this November as an Alto 1. She scored 5th in the state!

Orchestra students Adam Kurtz and Joshua Ly were selected for the 2018 Northern VA Senior Regional Orchestra!  After almost 15 years, we are proud to have these students represent Edison HS in this orchestra, performing on November 10 at Fairfax HS under the direction of Dietrich Paredes, conductor of Caracas Symphony Orchestra.

Student Eagles of the Month

Each month different departments will nominate students as Eagles of the month based on the following criteria:  Achievements, Attitude, Improvement, Community Involvement, Integrity, Attendance, and displaying IB Learner Traits.

All students nominated will receive a certificate.  However, the students selected receive a certificate, photo on the Pride Board (located right inside the main entrance on the upper left side), and they will be entered in the monthly drawing to attend a school event for free, and may participate in “Popcorn Friday”.

Congratulations to our winners:

Social Studies:       Meghan Lankford, Lindsay Smith

Math:                      Megan Fuglestad, Rowan Cusano

English:                  Shannon Lankford, Christian Williams

Great job and we are proud of you!

Congratulations, Dr. Ketchledge!

Our Academy Administrator, Whitney Ketchledge, successfully defended her dissertation last Friday and was awarded a Ph.D. in Occupational and Technical Studies from Old Dominion University. The research focus was on career academies and specialized programs. The dissertation was titled “Factors Influencing Student Enrollment in Career Academy Programs”. The study explored the reasons students indicated for enrolling or not enrolling in available career academy programs within one school division. A native of the tidewater area of Virginia, Dr. Ketchledge joined the Edison faculty last year.

Congratulations to both Tasha Williams-Brown and Bridget Love for receiving the Gold Star Teacher Award from W!SE!

Working in Support of Education (W!SE), an educational non-profit, identified 551 teachers across the country as Gold Star Teachers for their students’ performance on the 2017-2018 W!SE Financial Literacy Certification test. The national standardized test is administered to students at the end of a course on economics and personal finance. Students passing the test earn the W!SE Certified Financially Literate designation, which demonstrates they are financially capable when they graduate. To receive the Gold Star Award, a teacher must achieve a 90% pass rate in at least one of their classes on the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification test during the 2017-2018 school year.

Global STEM Event held at Edison HS last weekend a success!

STEM 1

The Global STEM community event, sponsored by The Boeing Company, was a success! There were presentations for students and families on career exploration and dance performances on STEAM, too.

STEM 2

NOVA Labs, Fairfax County Stormwater Management, 3D Herndon, the Federation of Galaxy Explorers – along with more than 15 other companies – had activities and exhibitions for students of all ages.

We thank The Boeing Company for their commitment to STEAM education, and their support of the Edison STEM program.
