Principal's Letter

Dear Waynewood Owls,

A big thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Enchanted Book Fair this week! It was a huge success, and we know that it took a lot of time and effort from many people to run so smoothly. A special thank you to our Scholastic Book Fair gurus, Stacey Bologna and Kelli Adams for the extraordinary amount of time they spent coordinating, decorating, and selling. As promised, Mrs. Cachine proudly wore the fairy wings today, as we far exceeded the goal of 1,000 books. In fact, we exceeded our second goal of 2,000 books, which means that our mystery staff member (drumroll please……Mr. Reigner) also earned his wings, too!

I want to remind you that we have two Waynewood evening events next week. On Wednesday, October 24, we have our first Moe’s Clean Kitchen Club Night. This is the one where we earn a whopping 40% from our sales, so if you are going to go to any of them, this is it! We also have a Waynewood favorite on Friday, October 26. It’s Halloween Fun Night! We are hoping for spooktacular weather, as the majority of the evening will be outside this year. More information about pre-ordering wristbands and food can be found at https://waynewoodelem.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=21. We still need some more volunteers, so please consider donating some time if you can!

In Renovation news, we are entering the home stretch. The team has been working hard to finish the new office and front entrance. The new entrance features a security vestibule which will filter all visitors through the office. We are still looking at a target date of Winter Break for moving the office and the remainder of the Owl’s Nest. That’s only 2 months away! Woohoo!

I want to do one last plug for the PTA Brick Campaign as well. Unfortunately, we are nowhere near our goal. This fundraiser was slated to be the major fundraiser for the year. We will have to look into other fundraising options to fund our PTA budget if the campaign is not successful. If you have not purchased your brick, and would still like to participate, please visit the PTA website at: https://waynewoodelem.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=35

If you are not interested in buying a brick, but would still like to donate to the PTA, there is an option to do that as well. Thank you for your support, we are looking forward to funding a number of wonderful programs this year, and we can’t do it without your help!

Have a great weekend, we hope to see you at Moe’s on Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Murphy

Murphy

I was raised on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Chesapeake Bay was and still is an important part of my life. I spent my summers crabbing, fishing and walking the beach looking for arrowheads, beach glass and driftwood. And, of course, reading!

My love of reading and books led me to a career as a librarian. I have worked for Fairfax County Schools since 2000. Prior to that I was a public librarian for fourteen years and an archivist for two years. One fun job I had while in college was working for the Chesapeake Bay Hydraulic Model. It was a fourteen acre scale model of the bay that measured tides, salinity and erosion rates. All of the data we collected is now calculated using computer modeling!

I live in the area and my husband and I have a daughter who is twenty-five. She works as a Logistics Engineer in Chicago. She was here at Waynewood for kindergarten! We also have two goofy dogs named Moose and Elvis.

Admin Note: Mrs. Murphy loves to help kids pick out books! She also helps to run the morning news every day.

STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID

Beginning on October 16th, FCPS started asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Learn more by watching this short video featuring Superintendent Scott Brabrand and the U.S. Army Garrison Commander COL Michael Greenberg from Fort Belvoir.
