Mrs. Evelyn Mastakas is the newest addition to Franklin Sherman's 2nd grade team. She is originally from New York City where she earned her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and taught first, third, and fourth grades before moving to Charlottesville, Virginia. Mrs. Mastakas and her family lived in Charlottesville for 20 years. She taught preschool there before moving to the Northern Virginia area this summer.
Mrs. Mastakas and her husband have been blessed with three beautiful children. Her oldest son is in law school at George Mason University, her daughter is a junior at VT, and her youngest son is a freshman in high school.
Mrs. Mastakas' goal as a teacher is to create a caring environment where students are excited to challenge themselves and are not afraid to make mistakes. She encourages independence, respect, and responsibility while instilling the importance of empathy within each student. She feels very fortunate to be teaching at Franklin Sherman as it encompasses all that a school should be because of the amazing staff, students, and families. Mrs. Mastakas is super excited to join the Franklin Sherman family!
Unfortunately, we must say good bye to our clinic aide, Ashley Asta. Miss Asta has accepted a position as the School Health Room Aide at Armstrong E.S. in Reston, VA, much closer to her home. Her last day at FSES will be Friday, October 26. Thank you, Miss Asta, for taking such great care of our students! We wish you the best at your new school!
We have several students who require the use of our handicap parking spaces for pick up and drop off. Unfortunately, they are not always able to use these spaces when needed due to cars being illegally parked there. Please do not park in the handicap parking spaces unless you have a handicap parking pass regardless of how long you think you will be in the building. These parking spots are for our handicap students and visitors only.

On October 26, 2018, parents are invited to join Principal Quigley and Mr. DeSmyter at 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria for a Principals' Coffee as they welcome the following representatives from Facilities Management of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to address the recent building issues and to answer any questions parents may have regarding the ongoing maintenance:
- Brian Crawford, Assistant Director of the Office of Facilities Management
- Rob Bargar, Assistant Director of the Office of Facilities Management
- Mike Novak, Aerosol Monitoring and Analysis, Inc.
- Brendan Menuey, Executive Principal, Region 2
On September 17, 2018, surface mold was discovered in two rooms in our building used for our before and after school program, SACC. These rooms were thoroughly inspected by Fairfax County Public Schools environmental experts, and all identified surfaces were cleaned and treated as appropriate. Out of an abundance of caution, an independent third party contractor, Mike Novak from Aerosol Monitoring and Analysis Inc., came out last week and conducted a quality air test of the SACC rooms and other areas of the building. Mike is invited to our meeting on Friday to share the results of the tests and to answer any questions you might have about the tests. We are committed to ensuring that our building is safe for our students, staff, and families.
Beginning October 16, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.
