Washington Mill Elementary School Banner Message

Principal's Message

Good afternoon families,

I sincerely hope each of you is doing well.  There’s a few items I’d like to touch on since our last Banner Message:

Our Colonial Charge has concluded and it was such a tremendously successful event!  We had a record number of funds raised for our kids, but also a record number of students and families participated.  Thank you so much to all of the families that came out for our Fun Run.  Your presence made it so enjoyable for the kids.

The money raised from our Charge has already been going to good use.  We started our PTA after-school clubs last week and over 100 students participated completely free of charge.  This is really a unique opportunity for our kids and it’s all because of the wonderful community we have.

Our first quarter of school will be coming to a close in the next couple of weeks and many of you will be conferencing with teachers.  Please ask your child’s teacher about results from I-Ready and the DRA.  These are two driving reading assessments we use to measure progress in reading.  In addition, I-Ready and unit assessments provide important feedback about your child’s progress in math.  Please review these results with the teacher when you meet as well.

Finally, I want to report that we are currently working with FCPS Food Services to provide a salad bar for students and staff.  We’re scheduled to deliver lessons to students and start our salad bar right around Thanksgiving.  Doing what we can to continuously provide our kids with everything they need to be mentally and physically healthy.

Thank you again for all of your support for our kids.  Our next school community event is scheduled for Thursday, October 25.  PTA and staff will be working together to provide our annual Fall Festival.  Please mark your calendars and try to attend.  I hope to see you all there!

Colonial Charge: Egg Challenge

Hello Families!  We not only reached our school fundraiser goal, but we exceeded it! Our students and families raised $25,026.37 to be used for field trips, after school programs, fall fest, spring fling, and so much more!

The kids were so excited to hear we reached our goal at the end of school.  Thank you so much for your help!

This is the fourth year of this parent run fundraiser which funds the many fun and educational activities at WMES.  This would not continue to be a success if it wasn’t for you all!

Because we reached our goal, Principal Mr. Bennink and Asst. Principal’s Ms. Pensiero and Mr. Wilson participated in the Egg Challenge last week! The kids had a blast watching them take turns smashing eggs on their heads and hoping for the hard boiled one.  Take a minute to have a good laugh:

Faculty and Staff Highlight

The month of October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease. Many of us know individuals who have overcame this disease with a fight, and some of us have lost friends and loved ones to this horrible illness. The Washington Mill Faculty and Staff came together in their PINK in honor of this month.

Advanced Academics Parent Night

A parent information meeting will be held in the Washington Mill library on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 6:30PM. The AART, Demetria Scott, will provide information about levels of service and examples at Washington Mill.

Impact Aid: Student-Parent Survey

The federal presence in our area and the significant tax exemptions available to federally connected personnel, businesses, and agencies has permitted Fairfax County Public Schools to be eligible for federal Impact Aid grants. FCPS uses the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students and to support our request for Impact Aid resources.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to WMES by October 26. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 26. FCPS staff will process the information with the utmost confidentiality. To ensure complete accuracy, please use the pre-filled survey that was sent home with your child. If it is not available, please use the form available online.
