FAIRFAX HS AUTO SHOP

Dear Family Fairfax,

Happy Friday!  Yesterday evening, I had an affirmation:  Fairfax High School really is an awesome place to be.

As I was visiting the Auto Tech program, ogling the Tesla that was on the lift and speaking with students about their experiences in our Auto Tech program, I was so moved to hear their passion for this learning.  I then had the privilege of serving on an advisory council with various automotive industry leaders in our community, and there I learned so much about the history of Fairfax High School’s Auto Tech program (with two graduates present who are now prominent in our community), the needs of a revived and expanding program, and the service that a program like this is and has provided to our past, present and future.

And then I walked to the Black Box Theater to watch Cabaret.

As I walked by parents who were waiting to go inside to support their students and the program, I couldn’t help but beam with pride that here, on the same night that I just left the practical art of Automotive Technology and the students who are thriving there, I was able to walk into a theater to hear the voices  and see the passion of a group of students whose love of the performing arts was not only nurtured but cultivated at Fairfax High.  Not only did I hear performances from Fairfax High School students, but other students who came to Fairfax because WE are fortunate enough to offer what they NEED.  Lucky.

As I walked to my office to end the night, I couldn’t help but think, if it had not rained, I would have left Cabaret and proceeded to watch our JV football team proudly represent Fairfax High School out on our field.   Combine that with cheerleaders who are leading fans, more athletes that I can name who are proudly wearing Fairfax Blue every week, and band, color guard, orchestra, and choral students who have been and will continue to represent us through their love of art and love of our school, and I have to write that I am one very lucky principal, and we are a very lucky community.

For some, I know this reads like overkill.  For me, with the overwhelming negative information overload and the pressures and challenges that come with being and parenting a high-school student, I think it is helpful to remember how lucky we are to live and work in such an incredible place:  Full of history; full of integrity; and full of tradition.

Wishing you all well this beautiful fall weekend,

SENIOR PORTRAIT MAKEUPS:

Senior portrait makeups are Oct 16-18 in the MPR. Appointment cards were mailed home; students can also check the posted schedule. Please help us include everyone in the yearbook; there is no fee for the yearbook portrait only.

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING:  PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Vision and hearing screening will be held on Tuesday, October 23 and Wednesday, October 24 for all 10th grade students, as well as students who are new to Fairfax County. If a student wears glasses, please be sure he/she has them at school on the screening day. The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation because they have difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones.

Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further testing is needed. Vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. Prompt follow-up of a referral is recommended.

If you would like to assist as a volunteer with the screening process, please sign up here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0D4AADAE2FA0FB6-vision2.
