This week for the
Positivity Project, we focused on looking for, and appreciating the good in
others. Compliments and thank you’s could be heard all over the school! We
learned that it really does feel good to make others feel good! Next week we
will be learning all about integrity. Integrity means doing the right thing
even when no one is looking. A person who has integrity does the right
thing even if everyone around them is doing the wrong thing. They stand firm in
their morals and values, and they practice honesty. M.H. McKee has this to say
about integrity; “Wisdom is knowing the right path to take. Integrity is taking
it”. Our students are faced with many challenging decisions every day. We
hope that as they learn about integrity they feel courageous enough to make the
right choices!
This years Science Night was a tremendous success. Thank you to all who helped put on this special event for our learners!
From October 10, 2018
to November 14, 2018, sixth-grade students at Forest Edge Elementary School will receive two lessons on the
topic of sexual harassment. These lessons seek to provide students with
the necessary information, resources, and strategies to help prevent
occurrences of sexual harassment as well as outline the steps to take if they
feel they or their peers are targets of these behaviors. In addition, the
lessons share how schools support targeted students so that they are able to
continue to focus on learning in an environment that feels comfortable and
secure. Parents/guardians may review the lessons through their ParentVue
accounts, which may be activated at www.fcps.edu/it/MyParentAccount.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of the
two sixth-grade lessons on the topic of sexual harassment. Letters and
the opt-out form went home the week of September 3, 2018 that provide more
information on how to opt your sixth-grade child out of the lessons about
sexual harassment. If you do not receive the letter or opt-out form or
have any additional questions, please contact Forest Edge Elementary
School at 703-925-8000.
"The past decade has seen an exponential increase in digital tools and opportunities, which carry the need for students to master a new set of life skills for behaving safely, ethically and responsibly online. Students are much more likely to understand good digital citizenship — the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use — when teachers and parents/trusted adults model it and explicitly teach and promote it on a regular basis." (Crompton 2014)
To that end, it's not just one person's job to teach digital citizenship to our students, but everyone's shared responsibility. Next week (October 15th-19th) will be the annual FCPS Digital Citizenship Week. This time is used to teach our students about online safety, appropriate behavior, and acceptable technology use. We encourage everyone, teachers and parents, to speak with their students about online safety and expectations for behavior. FCPS resources are available and will be sent home in the near future to help guide these discussions.
Beginning on
October 16th, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent
Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
Returning this
form is important because information from this survey results in an
anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S.
Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County
public schools and centers.
For each
school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return
the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not
apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed,
dated, and returned by October 26. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.
