NEWS FROM THE
ADVANCED ACADEMIC RESOURCE TEACHERS
Welcome back to Glen Forest and to the 2018-2019 School
Year!
It was nice meeting a lot of our parents at our Advanced
Academic Program (AAP) Information Night on Tuesday, October 8, 2018.
Did you know that Glen Forest has a liaison to Thomas
Jefferson School of Science and Technology?
We recently received a grant from the Thomas Jefferson Partnership. The
grant was used to pay for transportation for 24 fifth graders from Glen Forest
to the Thinkabit Lab in Falls Church, Virginia.

On September 8, 2018, our Level IV fifth graders and teacher
chaperones were picked up by a luxury motor coach. The students were so excited! Using a private motor coach rather than the
school bus allowed our students to spend a full day at the Thinkabit Lab. Their
comments were “This is going to be the best field trip ever!” and “Wow, we are
riding in luxury!” Upon arrival at the
Thinkabit Lab, the bus was greeted by the staff of the Thinkabit Lab. The students were given lanyards to be used as
identification badges. At the Thinkabit Lab, different STEM occupations were
explained and the students worked together in a group to code and create a
robot of their choice. It was an
opportunity that the students said changed their lives and the way they looked
at career choices. We are thankful to
the Thomas Jefferson Partnership for their generosity!

As you know, at Glen Forest, we want all children to be
exposed to the AAP curriculum. We are
excited to announce that the Thomas Jefferson High School Partnership will be
hosting a STEM FEST Saturday at Bucknell Elementary School on October 27, 2018,
from 2-5 PM. This STEM FEST is open to
all students in Kindergarten-Eighth Grade!
A flyer will be sent home next Tuesday.
Stay tuned to hear about our recently formed Odyssey of the
Mind teams and other activities! Have a
wonderful October!
