Canterbury Woods Weekly Happenings

Impact Aid Student-Parent Survey

Beginning on October 16th, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Canterbury Woods students will be receiving their forms through their Take Home Tuesday folders beginning TODAY, Tuesday, October 16th. All forms should be returned by Friday, October 26th to their teachers.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms should be signed, dated, and returned by October 26th . All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

IN

International Night 2018!

Thank you all so much for such an amazing International Night last Thursday! We had over 32 countries represented. Students, families and staff loved sharing their cultures and learning about each other. Thanks to everyone for the feedback and we look forward to making International Night 2019 bigger and better.

Cultural Responsiveness & Equity Interest Group

Cultural responsiveness and equity are division priorities for FCPS. Culture isn't just about language or ethnicity -- culture is often invisible, because it is everything a group defines as "normal."  If you are interested in partnering with us to help our school be more culturally responsive and promote greater equity in access, opportunity and outcomes for students, please fill out the form below.

PBL

1st Graders Learn About Citizenship

1st graders just wrapped up an exciting PBL (Project-Based Learning)!  As a way to tie together their recent social studies unit on Citizenship and their current reading unit on Character, kids were challenged with the following task:

How can you, as a campaign manager, create an advertisement and a short speech to convince your audience to vote for a book character as President?

Students worked in pairs to create campaign materials and give speeches. Each class held a primary election and then a final election using voting buttons on the computer. It was a great learning experience for all!

Bully

Bullying Prevention Month

This week, check out this Pacer’s video on “Ways to be There” from the parent perspective.

If your child shares with you that they’ve experienced bullying:

  • Take the time to actively listen to your child.
  • Validate their feelings.
  • Help them figure out what to do next. There  are lots of great resources, including your child’s School Counselor and the Pacer’s website.
  • Help them boost their confidence. If they’re not already, get your child involved in an extracurricular that brings them joy!

If you hear about a bullying situation at school, please encourage your student to come see Ms. Wilson or Ms. Brown for support, or reach out to us yourself at rawilson@fcps.edu or nlbrown@fcps.edu

Family and Community Engagement Conference:

FACEing the Future Together

Fairfax County Council Parent Teacher Association (CCPTA), in partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools' Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement, seeks to foster increased interaction between parents, students, educators, school administrators, education advocates, business, and community leaders to address issues vital to the academic success and well being of our children.

Family and community engagement (FACE) is at the center of everything that PTAs accomplish. The goals of family and community engagement are for each and every child and family in a community to feel as though they are part of a PTA family, and for that PTA family to be an active part of the community in which it resides.

We invite you to join us as we launch a new effort to welcome and encourage all families throughout Fairfax County to become active participants in their school community.
