Principal's Note

Parents,

Do you know that students in grades 1st through 5th study a foreign language (Arabic) at Sleepy Hollow which is called FLES/LTC? We are so proud of our program and how 21st Century skills are integrated throughout the lessons. Below outlines information that describes our foreign language program.

What is FLES/LTC?

Language through Content (LTC) is a type of Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) Program in which the target language is taught through Science and STEAM integrated content.

Goals of FLES/LTC Program:

  • To promote academic excellence by teaching students to communicate effectively in at least two languages
  • To develop 21st century skills by supporting integrated STEAM concepts instruction with a strong focus on Science

  • To promote at an early age the development of an “Ethical and Global Citizen” and cross-cultural understanding as part of the “Portrait of a Graduate” who acknowledges and understands diverse perspectives and cultures and contributes to solutions that benefit the broader community.
  • To help students understand the interrelationship and interdependence of the countries and cultures of the world

  • To develop increased functional proficiency in all aspects of the language with each year of study

  • To meet district, state and national foreign language standards

FLES/LTC Arabic at Sleepy Hollow

Arabic, which is the native tongue of nearly 400 million people in the world. This widely spoken language is great to learn at any age, but the younger you start, the easier it is to pick it up. Below is a link to an article from American Councils/ Language News; Seven Reasons Why Now is the Time to Learn Arabic.

Meet Our Staff

Ms. Carolyn Vachon

My name is Carolyn Vachon and I am the newest Self-Contained Autism teacher. I grew up in New Jersey right outside of New York City. I am a two time Slippery Rock University graduate. I graduated in December 2016 with my Bachelor’s of Science in  Education specializing in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. I just recently graduated with my Master’s in Education specializing in Autism. This is my first year teaching in my own classroom. I taught at Slippery Rock University’s preschool as a Graduate Assistant before starting at Sleepy Hollow. In my spare time, I like to cheer on the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Penguins and travel around the country and world.

Mrs. Erika Phillips

I am a fourth grade teacher at Sleepy Hollow. This is my 19th year of teaching. I was an FCPS student at Cherry Run Elementary School and Lake Braddock High School. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Radford University. My husband, two children and I lived in Williamsburg for the past 20 years before moving back to Fairfax Station recently. My daughter, Alyssa happily attends SHES in Ms. Samulka’s second grade class. I enjoy traveling with my family and reading. I am thrilled to be a part of FCPS at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School!

Family and Community Engagement Conference: FACEing the Future Together

Fairfax County Council Parent Teacher Association (CCPTA), in partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools' Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement, seeks to foster increased interaction between parents, students, educators, school administrators, education advocates, business, and community leaders to address issues vital to the academic success and well being of our children.

Family and community engagement (FACE) is at the center of everything that PTAs accomplish. The goals of family and community engagement are for each and every child and family in a community to feel as though they are part of a PTA family, and for that PTA family to be an active part of the community in which it resides.

We invite you to join us as we launch a new effort to welcome and encourage all families throughout Fairfax County to become active participants in their school community.

Teens Read Week

This week is a national literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association in 1998 to promote a love of reading among teens.

Encourage your teen to pick up a book from their favorite author and read it. Or, have a family book club and discuss different books from that same author.

  • Compare characters and story elements.
  • Compare the author’s mood.
  • Discuss similarities and differences
  • As a family, play charades by acting out certain scenes of the book.

Have fun with it and reinforce that reading can be enjoyed by every age.
